Hi, new member from Malaysia. Not a 510 owner per se, but I own a Datsun 160J SSS and was hoping I could come on here and get advice for tuning/restoring the engine since the 510 and the 160 both have L16's.

There is plenty of good information here that is applicable.

Let's see pictures of your project - no matter what state it is in...

Welcome to the realm.

Thanks for the welcome!

As it sits. Will be going to a body/paint shop sometime next week. Glaring issues mechanically include the timing belt making a lot of squealing noises, and if I recall correctly, previous owner mentioned rear wheel bearings needing to be replaced.

The car has been serviced and the air filter cleaned, but nobody in my area knows how to do much more than that with a Twin Carb engine, forcing me to learn how to tinker on it sooner or later.

Welcome to the site my friend. Your car looks like a North American version called the HL510 - cool! Please keep the pictures coming - side, rear and engine shots.

Curious, which twin carb set up is on your car, and what size of motor?

In North America, the early A510 like yous came with the L20B engine, carbureted. The second generation of the A510 (which had the quad square headlights) came with either EFI or carburated 2.2L NAPS Z engine. Both versions available with 4spd, 5spd or automatic in 2dr sedan, 2dr coupe, 4dr sedan, 4dr hatch back and wagon models.

Is your car actually a SSS version from the factory? If so, what sets the SSS model apart from the standard model A510's sold in Malaysia? We did not get the SSS model in North America. In European markets, this car was available with the FJ20 twin cam motor and exhaust as was the most successful Datsun rally car of all time on the world stage. Also early examples of the A510 were rallied with the LZ twin cam motor, but I have not seen any documented production cars with this motor from the factory.

Glad to have you onboard the 510 Realm, please do post photos under the hood and of the dashboard.

I haven't come across any regional 160's like this as their pretty rare as most here prefer the 710 Violet, so I have no idea whats the difference between a SSS and regular 160 unfortunately. The few things that do stand out right now are the 5-speed Dogleg transmission and the twin carbs (I think its standard with the L16 engine).

The motor is a 1.6 Liter. The SSS might be tacked on as when I bought this car it came with both Nissan and Datsun badges, suggesting one of the previous owners took a little liberty with badging.

In Europe this model was Datsun Violet A10 140J/160J, SSS version only coupe bodystyle. Engines was A14 and L16, SSS L16 twin carbs, and maybe latest versions had Z16.
Factory team rallycars have L20B with FIA head in GR.2 or LZ20 16V twin cams in GR.4.
FJ20 was not available at A10 Violet.
