Twin Lakes : Hike to High Pass

Post by bertvorgon »

I'm throwing this out as a heads up for a mid September hike, shooting for either the 14th or 15th, weather dependent.
I have had a few people ask to come on one of our adventures, so here it is.

This trip involves a short drive down the Mt. Baker highway, then, we turn off at the works shed and drive up a 4 x 4 road to Twin Lakes, at the 5,500ft. level. From there we hike in the alpine across the base of Winchester Mt, and proceed up to High Pass, some 5,700ft.. Then we will proceed up to another ridge, almost 7,000ft, and just below Mt. Larrabee, which is 7,868 ft. There are some old mine shafts we can explore possibly and the views are GUARANTEED spectacular!
This is a moderately strenuous hike, just has some steep uphill sections. It is a foot path, so no bush wacking or anything like that. I think it is about 2 miles one way if I remember correctly. I would suggest reasonable footware, as a twisted ankle up here would make us all feel bad about leaving you for the bears. Some people just saw some goats up there, which would be very cool. We have seen bears up here, due to the large mountain blueberry crops. A day pack is all that is required, lunch will be on the top. Bring a water bottle, there should be fresh water up there also. I will update as we go, for any clothing that we should bring, it can be cool depending on the day, we are at almost 7,000 ft after all.
We will sort out seating too, as the road is very rough for the last few kilometers, so low vehicles are OUT. I have potentially 3 committed 4x4's at this point.
I will post up a few pictures from when we were last there, right before 911. The map shows the road #3065, up to twin Lakes, then Trail# 676. At Low Pass, there is a trail that drops down and there is an old gold mine we can check out there.
Typical with most of our outings, this will be an all day adventure, with an early start on the day.

What's with the no passports..... :(

Here are a few pictures hopefully to wet your whistle on this hike. It is kind rare where you can drive to this sort of elevation, and then have such a nice trail into the alpine area, with such views. Matt and I are quite excited about heading back there again, and fun to take some 510 people. It was the original group of 510'ers that we took up there for an overnighter, back in the 90's. Great fun.

Im in! Baring any unforeseen problems... I have room for one more person in my toy 4x4 also. My new life style for the last three months will allow me to do this no problem, dropped 32lb already and feeling GOOD :) Just did MT Cheam solo this Saturday... This will be fun if its a go. Bringing the camera...

Hey Chad, if you've lost 32 lbs, I've gained it! This "boulder rolling", is it what the Flinststones used to do or is this something like the Club "engine blows"?

It's fun when I can hijack my own thread..yeeehaahhh

Pictures being scanned in......

Chad, I was just up in the Cheam bowl last week with my wife!

Boulder rolling, yes kinda like the engine blow......you find a HUGE boulder, and set it loose.....

these pictures are back in the mid 90's, when I took the 510 gang up to red Mountain gold mine, we camped out up there and explored the old mine, then rolled some boulders.

First photo is 510 club founder Noel, in the red hat, and the three DAVE'S getting a big one ready to roll

second photo is Dave Brown and Jamie Mitchel getting a small one going

Another thing that is interesting is how much SMALLER the glacier has gotten in the background, both since 1969 when I first went up there, and then this past spring, when Matt and I had the avalanche come down on us.

Last photo is Dave Christie and Dave Doan letting a big one go...

One more for posterity...

This was when that storm came in and we SHOULD have gone down...instead of up......

That is Matt on the left bottom, he would have been maybe 10 then....yikes.....

And the other young fellow is Jim Hargrove's son, who is now on his way for an Indy car ride...!!!

Remember my tram way river crossing, I still have that 300' of rope we uses to pull ourselves back and forth. That was too much fun to say the least.
We had to hike down to the river, from our vehicle, then string the rope, which Jamie has, to attach to the other side, so we could pull ourselves back and forth on the tramway. Then, we hiked for 4 hours to the 5,000 foot level of the mine, camped, then hiked higher to explore the second shaft of the mine, at the 5,500 ft level.

I remember the first scouting mission, where we had to wade the river to get across, to get the tram. wow was that cold.

Good times for sure!

Just a reminder that we are 6 days away from the hike. I just got back from a few days camping and the alpine is getting into the nice fall colours. The mountain blue berrys are sure good too.

So far, the weather forecast looks good, so by Wednesday we should be able to make the call and meet times. I think we will cross at the truck crossing, as most people are coming from the Vancouver quadrant. We will meet at the Campbell Valley store again, on 176th and 8th.

So far, we have a good contingent of people coming, and maybe post up to confirm, so we can be sure we have enough seats.

Tracker : keith, Matt, Laura, Brody.

CRV ; Jason ???

James, ???

toyota Malcolm ????

Landcruiser Dave Christie and maybe his son(s).

Byron ????
