Fuel Pump??

Post by jwl013 »

My 510 (L16) just started to not crank today, its turning over fine but acts like its not getting fuel, so i figure it might be the fuel pump. Ive never worked on a mechanical pump, so my question is, is there a specific way to make sure its not working before i buy another one?
thanks

Disconnect the fuel line to the carb, grab a can a put the end of the fuel line in it, crank the motor over to see if fuel gushes out under pressure. Make sure there is gas in the fuel tank first.

Even easier to look in the sight glass (assuming stock downdraft carb) and check if there is fuel. Defdes' way is the sure-fire check, though.

Fuel pumps generally don't die. If you think it's fuel, it's probably electrical. Here's to fuel!

ok, i checked it out....i pulled one of the spark plugs and touched it to the block to see if it was getting fire. i could smell fuel on it but it was not creating a spark.
Do you think its the spark plugs or the distributor?

You're kinda going to have to tell us, since we aren't there turning wrenches. We don't know your maintenance schedule or the history of the plugs in your engine. Also, the check for spark at the plugs is a bit more involved than just touching the plug to the block. When you describe to us what you do or attempt, make it clear and comprehensive since we can't see.

Generally speaking, unless they are fouled, the plugs won't be your problem. Do you have an FSM for the 510?

I have to admit, and all out failure of a coil is rare. Are you sure that the connections weren't corroded or broken? The only reason I bring this up as that bad electrical connections at the coil, ballast resistor and at the distributor are very, very common. And of course the end result is the same - no sparky.

Glad you're on the road, no how about some pictures of your ride :D

I lost an ignition coil last winter on the black wagon Bryon, blew up and puked oil all over the inner fender. Good thing the NapsZ runs 2 of them!
