Here's another example of another car that is for sale in Guadalajara (asking $24,000 MX) that we went to look at. It has the rear badging and a better example of a rear bumper. This one also has the J15 engine and I think the owner said it was a 1973.

Wow, that blue sedan has the complete wagon rear/suspension/fuel tank/spare tire mech, etc. Wild.

I personally would love to bring one of these back home just because it's so different. Personally I like the SSS tail light 69 car, what dash did the 69 car have?
Of the few 510's I saw in Mexico , I complete missed the front drum brakes. I wonder if they are the same brakes I have on Ole Blue?
So Bob, if you end up with a Mexican 510, will you swap out the motor? If so what would your local choice be for an engine? You've done the SR swap already, is there a better locally sourced option?

Now that looks really neat! Is that rear end a H190 like that of a Canadian/American wagon or something smaller?

The few Mexican 510's I've crawled under over the years all seemed to have a smaller rear axle - I'm guessing this is the H160, the same one utilized in the A510's and the 610 wagons and the 710's.

I'm not sure if anyone can substantiate this, if you can - please do chime in.

I don't know what this rear is. Certainly not an H190 or any other Hxxx rear I've ever see.

It looks like a 10 bolt Chevy with all the bolts holding on that tin rear cover. From a little research it appears the B210 in Australia used a Borg Warner model 68 rear which looks allot like this one. May be its a BW68 rear.

Thanks for taking the time to take and post these pictures. I always find it interesting to see how cars change in design from country to country.

I think the gas tank would have been better positioned if these cars were IRS but by the looks of the tank, I'm not sure the IRS would be the right answer for the local road conditions.

Road conditions - don't get me started!!! Mexicans don't obey signs (many can't read) so the most effective speed control measure that they have come to utilize is the TOPE (translation - monstrous speed bump). They come in many different shapes and sizes, heights, inclination angles and type. Just like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get until it gets you. These are installed, not by the traffic authorities, but are built by the Tapatios (locals) to control the speed of vehicles in their neighbourhoods.

Then there are the wonderful cobblestone streets in all of the villages. These are anything but smooth consisting of field rocks plunked down in sort of a level (but not quite) fashion. Your lucky to get 40K km. out of a set of tires, not to mention shock absorbers, ball joints, bushings, etc.

Ah Mexico........ gotta love it!

And for the wagon fans, here is an example of a Mexican 1973 wagon. It looks like it has the J15 as well but the ad posted by the owner says 1600? He is asking $22,000 MX for this one but notice it doesn't have any windshield wipers or a battery. These must be "extra" cost options!!!.

That wagon looks great! I'd rock that in a heart beat!

It also looks like front turn signals are optional also! Ha ha ha.

So $22,000MX = $1670 USD.
These look more than a bit a bit bondoed and "ridden hard, put up wet."
Do you ever see really nice $50-100K MX ($4-8k USD) examples, something a car collector might have?

So can we expect to see Saltamontes Dos in the Carrera next year? It's a lot closer than Newfoundland at this point! Maybe these guys and Taz Harvey can help:

That Mexican Datsun used car market looks like a challenge, that's for sure! Several references on those last couple sites to "BRE", among other things. Some are pretty creative.
