transmissions

Post by seagoat »

I have a Z20RS motor and want to install a Z22E. Need tofind out if all Z motors are compatible in bolt patterns. Would love to go higher in upgrade but knowledge and funds are lacking.

Not familiar with the Datsun Z20RS.
Do you mean the Z20S used in the '80-'81 HLa510?
Or the Z20S used in the '84-'86 720?

Or is it the Z20E used in the '80-'81 200sx car?

If it was out of one of these cars and years then yes a Z22E will interchange. There is no way to tell the Z20E from the Z22E from the outside, they are visually identical. Well there is one way... look on the driver's side of the engine on the block just below the number two exhaust plug. Stamped there will be Z20, Z22 or Z24 if it is a Z series motor. All three have the same transmission mounting bolt pattern. The Z20E and Z22E 8 plug heads are identical although some non California and all Canadian Z20E heads were four plug design with four wire distributors. All Z22E motors were the 8 plug 8 wire distributor design.
