Re: Another 84 Datsun/Nissan 720 4x4 project
Update.....
Stripped truck.....cleaned, primed and painted all parts.
Box was removed....little bit of rust was found.....so the whole front box panel was removed.
Replaced with checkered plate....riveted and urethaned....then painted.
Bed was finished with a spray in bed liner.
The color is a charcoal beige metallic.
Cleaned and rockguarded the canopy....good enough for now till I find a better fitting one.
Drove it home and replaced the upper and lower BJs....calipers and pads.
Temporarily installed the lights to make the trek to the paint booth.....should be today.
Actually....it's at the other end of the road from your place....Merlin.

Almost a year since my last update.....
Sooooo....The LZ23
Everything in the bay was removed...cleaned and painted etc.
Exedy clutch-rated for 312 ft lb of torque....(240mm)
Resurfaced flywheel
Long tail trannie from 1980 2WD 720 (removed 26" short tail).
Thanks Merlin!
Low mile (160000km) Z22 bored to 89mm with NPR pistons, ARP studs, resized rods,
U67 head with new valves, guides.
The machinist supplied some outer Comp springs....but the inners are close to binding, decided to get a whole new set from Nissanpart.cc
HG was opened up with my laminate trimmer..... for the water passages.
Shadbolt cam with .491 lift and 256 duration, make a good DD.
Intake and head were port matched.
IM/carb plates were also cleaned up.
New timing chain assembly...etc....etc
The new Beck Arnley cam sprocket did not come with any timing notches on it....so I transferred some for another sprocket I had.
Still waiting for lash pads, retainers and valve springs from Nissanparts.cc.
Oil pan and motor mounts had to be 'modified' for the engine lean.
Console, tunnel (floor) plate, transfer case companion flange and front propeller shaft also had to be changed...etc...etc.
Most likely find a 38/38 for it after initial engine break-in.

Have you done the final assembly of the head-clock yet? Or was this a test fit inthe photo?
If you haven't done final assembly, contact me...

Re: Another 84 Datsun/Nissan 720 4x4 project
Ya...I test fitted the head, just so I could do all the plumbing...etc.
I'll bring it back inside and do the final wipe pattern.....I know the size of lash pads I needed with the stock retainers, but figured the new retainers might change the lash pad size and or wipe pattern????
I just used the .150 pads and cut up a .010 feeler gauge into small pieces, then kept sticking them under the .150 pad until I got the wipe pattern perfect.
Ordered retainers in Feb....wrong ones..(A series?)....reordered 8-.150-180 Aluminum retainers, 4-.190-.220 retainers because my exhaust valves are a little different that the intakes....more meat above the keeper.
Also ordered 8 -.160, 8 -.170, 8 -.180 and 8 - .190 lash pads...just in case
Nissan Comp valve springs.
It's been just about 6 weeks, so I called Nissanparts.cc this morning....said they got some of the parts. The retainers (package) they received was not marked (again)....and he hasn't taken the time to check it out..???...or compare to the retainers I sent back
Said there were 'issues' at Nissan.
Not impressed.
Here's the stock retainers with .150 lash pads.
Calculated the intakes need .180s pads....and since the pads are sticking out farther on the exhausts, I might be able to use the .180-.220 retainers...??? Exhausts need .150-.160 pads.
