Got a heads up from Byron....Thanks.... :)
Suggested I drill some holes in the block.....cooling passages.
I read about it....but....a few people didn't do it and there wasn't much info on it.
So.....
Here's the sacrificial Z24 HG on the Z23 block...and the L20B HG in next pic.

Shall aug them out ASAP....most likely use my laminate trimmer again, should fit in the head holes.
Second hole down, upper right in top pic....was just a 'test' hole....not needed.???? There is a hole in the head though.
The 2 holes in my good HG I 'drilled'.... are....2nd over on bottom right and the large oblong on left.
Soooo....all 7 holes in bottom row....including the 3rd (round) from right?
Drill the 5/16 holes at the smaller end of the oblong...like the 4th hole from the right????

Yep - those are the ones. This will help with the longevity of the block and head gasket, keeping the water circulating between the block and the head and help eliminate the "hot" spots.

I wish I had a photo of the top of any L16 thru L20B, as it would show these holes in place.

Thanks Byron..
What about the second hole down, upper right in top pic....it was just a 'test' hole in the HG....not needed.????
There is a hole in the head.
Need to find a pic of any L20B block....see the water passages

Screwed up the first HG....holes were too close to cylinder.
2nd attempt came out pretty good.
7 holes in block
9 in HG

I noticed you trimmer the front end of the HG off...
When you drop the Z gasket on, it does work with the L front cover.

On the LZ24 in the ice racer, we've had better luck using the whole Z gasket, with only a small modification and some sealant.
The other, more common method, which I don't know if you plan on doing, we found leaked more where the 2 gaskets are butted together.

Using some tin snips, we cut the 2 bolt hole pieces off and move them to where they are on the L timing cover.
This leaves a continuous gasket to keep all of the oil inside, and the 2 little pieces will keep from breaking the ears off the head.
The sealant helps hold them in place, and when you lay everything in place, you'll see where it'll kind of be required on the one corner (driverside) to help seal it.

Actually that last pic has the front of the HG still intact....just can't see it.
First pic....was just a used dummy gasket.

This was my first mock up.....'same' as the 1 I'll install
Ya....Both tabs/wings are cut flush with head. 1 'clipping' is rotated and fills the void....fits rather well :D

So......the LZ23 is up and running with about 800 miles on it.
Compression was at 175 across the board and climbing when I last checked.....about 450 miles ago.
About 2 lbs diff between cylinders.
Engine was assembled at No 2 cam position...now at 3
L dizzy calved....had no backup, so I swapped the L TC to the Z22 TC.
Now I can run all my Z22/24 dizzys.... if....and or when needed. :D

Front end was tightened up

Seems like I can't find a good trannie in my back 40....on my third.
Started with Z shortail....got an L from Merlin.....ended up with the L bell on the 81 Z longtail.
Which does create other issues....lol

....Still can't locate a miss.
New plugs....obviously
Spark plug leads / resistance.....good.
Replaced IM gasket/sealed carb adapter plates...etc....etc...
Vacuum is....maybe a little low....but no found leaks.
New Blaster coil....checked the primary resistance in the OE coil...twice the values....replaced
Jets are 135/155.
Weber ran good on my other Z24.

Sounds okay cold.....but....soon as you open choke when warm......miss.
Smooths out at higher RPM
Could be plugged.....but....took it apart.....blew it out......reassembled...no diff
Odds suggest I missed something though.............. :D

A/F ratio readings are...12.5 plus minus at idle......WOT is 13.3ish.
Driving around ....14-17...depends on load/speed
Timing is 15 degrees...advance is functional...to carb

Only had the motor to 5000......having the sprocket at No 3 helps the heavy truck with 30x9s 'out of the hole' (and hills) a little quicker.
Have some steal 150-180 retainers coming..... so....will' upgrade' the springs ...then rev to 6ish/ish 8) ...woot!..:)
Hold the pads in a little better.......

Crud where the awl was pointing

38/38 this week....see what happens

Also....
I believe the counter shaft bearing....or (AGAIN)..the input on my new trannie is going south.........
Poop.

Video is unedited, just showing the warmup...vacuum gauge is 2.5 lb heavy.
Not what I wanted to post....but for some reason my puter doesn't recognize my camcorder.
It worked once... when i restarted the puter with the 'corder turned on.... hmmmmm

Anywho.....

Thanks Jason....ongoing project to say the least :D
I can see another trannie in the near future... ... .think I'll find a 'C' trannie and mount the L bell to it.

That's the single cam KA tranny I think Doug, should be able to find a few in the yards these days! Fun stuff with bigger motors though!

Yup.....closet wreckers is Kamloops....road trip is in order I guess :D
There is a small wrecker here....but.... he's a dick....no KAs and or anyways.
He just crushed a couple of 620s and a 78 510 Goon......didn't even let me know :x
The trannies I had were obviously compromised...no history on them.
I do have another 82 Z longtail (smaller countershaft bearing) though, shifts good, no metal deposits on bung....but not gonna chance it.
I also have a couple of 85 trannies with the larger counter shaft bearing, but they no fit the L bell without some modification.
Soooo....I'll take the L bell to Kamloops in the fall and get it 'enlarged' for the upgrade.
