Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Ok, so I'm following Julian over to the Non- side, but not building a 3 wheeler. I was out looking for front fenders for my 720 (more on that later) and stumbled onto this little Toyota Corona, 1970, with and auto trans. Me and a buddy drug it home and I figured I would give the old engine a shot, but its seized up solid and I tried to free it up but gave up. My buddy had a 22R-E toyota motor from a Celica so I got it and i'm going to swap it in the Corona.
Here's a few pics of the process......

Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Then started working on the 22RE.......
I had to change the oil pan on the 22re to clear the cross member, unlike a datsun, it's easier to flip the cross member, but on the Toyota, the oil pan out of a truck will do the job, I think...or at least that's my plan. I have only seen one Corona on line that has this swap, and there is not much write up, just some pics. That guy built his oil pan, but I think this will work just fine.

Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Did I mention that this is a super tight budget build, I am not going to post $$$ spent, but it's really low budget, it's a project to get me out of the habit of going overboard......I hope. So I lowered the motor onto a tire and laid it on it's side, cleaned off all the crud and piss canned the side of the block with some high temp semi-gloss paint and then painted the new donor truck oil pan.

Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Thanks Jordan, It's a lot of fun so far because I'm just going at it.....I want to get it done and on the road. it's getting a 5 speed too! so it should be fun to drive....just a little power increase from stock but still should be fun to drive. I also plan on dropping it a few inches and run the stock rims and tire size.JordanTr wrote:Cool project Rich.

Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Tomorrow I should be able to start making motor mounts and get the motor in there and possible fit the transmission. I don't see it being too hard.
Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
Corona's were made for swapping, who knew? That removable center section of the radiator support is genius.
Bro-in-law came across a free Corona once. Starter was bad on the original engine, so he tried a spare 22R start he had laying around. Bolted up, started it right off. He then found other issues, and I took the rear bumper, removed the side kickers, and bolted it to my blue 510.

Looks pretty clean and all there. A cool project, but you are turning into me, too many dam projects going on at once! The difference is that you finish yours.
Re: Project Ghetto Fabulous!!.....the Crazy Corona..........
I wouldn't say I finish all of them!! but I haven't scrapped any yet so I guess it's all good!! It's been really fun so far, I was surprised to see how many parts are interchangeable much like the Datsun stuff. I am also learning more on the 20 series family of Toyota engines, they are all much the same. Hopefully I can get the motor mounts done tonight. I want to get the thing on the road soon! The interior is in pretty good shape too.

It will be interesting to see how that thing handles.
In the day, I always thought they were weak compared to the 510, just because of the way they are suspended.
Curious to see how the lowering etc. will work.
How is it working on the Toyota stuff? Compared to Datsun

Yea, I am pretty sure it's going to handle like a bag of ass. But I don't care, I'm not upgrading much of that stuff, I just want it to run good and be reliable. It's even got drum brakes all around!! But I will try to do the best I can with the suspension. Probably just cut a coil out on the front and blocks on the rear. There is plenty of room underneath the car so it should get pretty low.
Working on the Toyota is similar to the Datsun, it's all old and rusty!!
