“Golddust” – Jordan’s RB26 twin turbo powered S14 260SX

Post by JordanTr »

After spending the last 6 years building the 510, I’ve always been hankering for an S chassis car.

510 for reference

This whole project kind of fell into my lap and now that I have some semblance of a plan I figured I would outline it.

Pops picked up the 1995 240sx for a great deal on craigslist since it needed an alternator. Ran mint with a fresh battery and he drove it onto the trailer to get it home. The good motorset will be pulled and dropped into the Datsun 521 pickup. The plan was to recup the motorset cost from parting out the 240. I had done this with great success on the S13 I parted out whilst building my 510 so why not do it again?? After ripping up and down the street in the 240, I got hooked. It drove really nice (for a 20 year old stock 240). The chassis is also super mint with no rust so it seemed like a shame to chop it up and ruin it.

Knowing that I didn’t need another project, the S14 sat around for a while awaiting its organ donation. Occasionally, I would drool online at LSx powered S chassis cars for the sweet torque and awesome weight distribution but school, time, money, and a disassembled 510 always managed to steer me away from this project.

This spring I stumbled upon a wrecked Skyline GTR by fluke that was too good to pass up. After scooping it up, I immediately started researching the 26 swap. While not as light as the LS motors, it is in the family and has 2 hairdryers :D

That pretty much brings us up to date…

I went with an OEM flare on the 510 build for a few reasons. A couple of the biggest reasons were durability and reliability and of course cost. I enjoy being a junkyard dog and hunting down all the good OEM bits is fun for me.

The S14 build is going to go with a very similar flare. Trying to keep the costs down a bit and build it for reliability and fun. I want something that’s quicker than the 510 and that I can blast down the freeway comfortably in. I’m also itching to get my hands dirty on a new chassis since I’ve learned quite a bit from the 510 project. Going to try for the awkward balance between performance street car and race car by trying not to solid mount everything. I’m going with 17s to try to keep some rubber between the rims/road to improve the ride quality as well despite my love for big ballin 18s on S14s.

RBs make pretty wicked torque down low so this should be right up my alley alongside the KA 510 and Pops’ Duramax pickup. This thing should blow the doors of my dads S2k.

Here’s a dyno sheet of a stock RB26 in an S13 which is essentially the power I’m striving for. Hoping to not exceed 2950 lbs without a driver.

Image

I’m going to keep Golddust the “beautiful” gold color and keep most of the mods restricted to the engine/suspension/brakes end of things. I’m going to try to resist powdercoating everything but the cam/coilpack covers and some other tasteful bits will be powdered candy apple red. She’s gonna be pretty sleepy on the outside.

Pretty excited to get going on this!! :D

Stay tuned for some updates as they come. They'll be a bit slow for a while since I'm out of commission for a bit but we'll get there.

I get the feeling we're about to have a pretty good ride...without even setting foot in the car.

Keep us posted.

Cant wait to see where this goes. I have always wondered about the difference in the headlights between golddust and the white one pictured. Is it the Jap front end or just a newer year? I had an S13 as my first car and always wanted to do the Silvia front end as it looks much better than the pop ups.

Thanks guys. It should be a real sweet cruiser with all that straight 6 torque.

PMK,

1995-96 240sx (like this one) are "zenki" (Japanese for early) and 1997-98 are "kouki" (Japanese for late). Everything from behind the fenders is the same.
Kouki left, Zenki right.

There's also the S15 Silvia ('99-'02) as well. I saw my first one in Canada a few weeks ago. Pretty cool stuff.

Abby makes sense now. I always thought it was a JDM swap because you never seen the later. The s15 are so sick, there is a white one here in Vegas I see once in a while.

PMK,
Is that the stock looking one with the SR20DET license plates?

I've seen him get on it hard. It really scoots!

Not sure on the plates but it does look pretty much stock. I always see him driving the other way!

No wrench turning but I did some more research...

Had a bit of brake booster discussion on another thread:

It appears the R32GTR and Z32 share the M215T dual diaphragm (230/205) booster and BM50 1" master cyl. S14 MT no ABS has 7/8" master with M23 230mm single booster, S14 AT non ABS and both ABS share 15/16" masters and M195T dual diaphragm (205/180) boosters. I like stiff brakes so I hope the small M195T w/ 15/16" works out. Not ditching my GTR booster or BM50 just yet though.

After checking it out, it's blatantly obvious that the GTR tank has no place in an S14. Maybe a fighting chance in an S13 (that's what I was remembering) but not S14.

Got a decent parts collection going but I still don't have any adjustable suspension bits, coils or bushings (they'll come later).
RB20 xmember is pending, should have one next weekend
Looking for a Z32 short shifter and R33 GTR rims mostly right now.

Ya Mike... It should be good.

Wasn't exactly looking seriously for Brembos but these guys followed me home today. They're from '04-'06 vintage Sentra SE-R Spec V. For those that don't know, they use a 305x22mm rotor and bolt onto S13/14, R32, Z32, Z31, S12V6, M30, blah blah blah. Rotors are 4 lug so they need to be redrilled, NBD. Rotors are 2.5 lbs lighter than Z32 30mm rotors and offer 1" larger diameter so it's a double win. Internet says GTR fronts are 25 lbs apiece so this'll be about 9 lbs lighter than those. Not sure how the caliper weights will compare but the Brembos are significantly larger than the Z32 or R32GTR calipers. Quite sure the calipers are not 9 lbs heavier than GTR calipers though. :D

Caliper pistons on Z32 are 40.45mm, on GTR they're also 40.45mm and SE-R Spec V is 38mm x 2 and 44mm x 2. Basically this works out to ~+3% difference in braking force yet the diameter is larger. We'll see how it goes. Too many variables to directly compare. Bias will obviously be biased more to the front but there's also going to be a giant cast iron inline 6 up there so it might work out perfectly. These should do a pretty sweet job of filling 17s, some have fit a very select few 16s over these so we'll see if R32GTR rims will fit. Either way, the 510 isn't getting Brembos.

The car isn't going to see the track so I'm not too worried about the non overkillness of the brakes. If these prove to be insufficient, I can join the big dogs and go for Z33 track Brembos.

Om nom nom :)

Just a bit bigger than Z32s
