MANNING PARK
As the site seems a bit slow right now, I thought I would share my day yesterday. I have been going up to Manning Park now for over 40 years. It is such a gem, within 2.5 hours of driving, and then has such a wealth of trails jumping off into the widlerness. Something for everyone really. In the height of summer, it of course gets busy, but, in the shoulder seasons, it is a true delight. I try to get up there at least four times a year, and I was determined to get up there camping one more time. But, the weather has not been great, so my wife and I just decided to head up on Saturday for a hike, ready for what ever the weather would throw at us. We left Vancouver in the sun, and, when we got up the the Park, I could see the next front coming in over the mountains. With a little luck, we got our hike in around Lighting Lake, and, when we got back to the car, I could see snow coming down on the peak off to the west. The park was DESERTED, painted with the fall colors, still as could be. As we pressed further back into the trail system, it became absolutely dead silent, away from the last of our mechanical world. Not a sound, it has been awhile since I have experienced that total quiet, where all you can hear, is you own heart and breathing. We looped up to the far side of the lake on the way back, walking through the closed campsite, the ghosts of summer long gone. We sat for our lunch, and all of a sudden, the Whiskey Jacks showed up from nowhere, delighted to see some humans again, knowing they would get SOMETHING! We always carry some bird seed, so they were not dissapointed. We then came upon the Rainbow Bridge, where my son jumped off from in the summer time( as I write this he is making his way to Machu Picchu, in Peru), now standing quiet till spring, when the kids come back. This past summer, we followed the trail way back into the mountains, leaving the tourist area behind, finally getting to the last lake, where, the water is so cold, the trout just jump onto your fishing hook. Looping back to the parking lot, my Honda looked out of place all by itself. I hope you enjoy the pictures.

This pictures is taken above where we drive to the lookout with the 510's. It was taken at the end of June. From here a trail net work spans out over the peaks, where you can get lost forever if you choose. I have been back about 10 miles from here, where there is a spot for good water.

Re: MANNING PARK
Good stuff Keith. I work outdoors surveying and so there are times I actually get paid to hike through the 'wilderness'. I worked my first outside job only just over 20 years ago and grew into it. It allows me some solitude and a chance to walk around in the forests of the Island. Been working in places in winter weather no sane person would go hiking in. Seeing skunk cabbage is one of the reminders that spring has arrived. For Christmas one year I asked for and got the illistrated Pojar/MacKinnon "Plants of the Pacific Northwest Coast" and can now even name a few plants I find. In early summer there are chocolate lillys, tarbells, indian paint brush, even orchids I don't know the names for and walking through a field of wild mint and having their fragrance on the air around you. I can name most of the tree species which is handy and a job requirement. Picking salmon and black berries when in season and thimble berries (my favorite) and eating them as you work with red stained mouth and hands. Douglas asters in the fall and filling my vest pocket with Hazelnuts for cracking later. But no matter the weather there is always something to see and enjoy out there.

We are so lucky in the province, to go from this to this, in a matter of hours.

Re: MANNING PARK
Mike, you must run into B.C.'s indigenous species occasionly too. I don't worry about the bears to much, it is the cougars. I have had a couple of close encounters over the years, at the North end of the Island. I have come upon wolves a few times, but they just ghost back into the wood. Worst encounter was a buck, that charged Matt and I, scared the hell out of us. Matt and I did have a huge black bear stand up out of the blue berries one year, 20 feet away from us. We were down wind, coming up the trail, early in the morning, so he did not smell us, only heard us, at the last second. I had the presence of mind not to run, slowly took my pack off and held it up over my head, thus making me look a lot taller/bigger. THAT was really scary, and when you hear of someone shaking in fear, that was what happened to Matt, he was only 12 or 13 at the time. I doubt he would have done anything, but, you never know. He was well fed at least.......

Re: MANNING PARK
We make lots of noise while working even if they didn't hear the language. Came round the fenced sewage lagoon in Woss once and scared the crap out of a bear about 20 meters away. See one or two a year, some years none at all. Stepped in it more often than seeing one. I once picked up a stunned Bald Eagle off the highway. I was terrified. The talons are as long as your index finger. Luckily he wasn't sure what was happening. I draped a gunny sack over his head and picked him up and put him in a truck.
