This has nothing to do with Datsuns at all but;

Post by jim.nos »

I can't think of any other group of people to ask.

I remember watching or reading something about a driver of a Porsche 911 in the early 70's in an Eastern Bloc (maybe) country that would go and rip around downtown somewhere at night and evade police. The first night or two, it started as something fun to do but then it turned into some sort of spectacle to show that people were people and the police (state) couldn't control everything. Spectators would actually show up and cheer for the driver. It went on for a week or so without the driver getting caught.

Am I crazy or does somebody else know what I'm talking about?

I don't know if it's related (and I've never searched for the vid) but didn't the first Escape from Stockholm use a 911?

Yeah thats a 911 in the escape from Stockholm 1 video but it is far too recent.

The chases I'm thinking of were many years ago.

So many things started right in the early 70's, with the advent of the Cannonball Run in the States, started by Car and Driver magazine guys Pat Bedard and Brock Yates. Then the movie came out, then all of a sudden there was stuff like the escape from Stockholm. First one I ever saw was with a Ferrari going balls to the wall at night. Hell, I even checked into doing the CannonBall Run, stupid as that reality would have been. Bunch of us C.A.C. guys thought we could do it...HAH...a bunch of 20 year olds trash talking for days, then realizing the fuel cost alone would have broke us.. Then our drives to the Slaloms became kinda of a CannonBall.
Now, look at all the stuff on the Net with cars and Mororcycles running from police, specially in Europe.
I have the european version of the Cannonball run in my video collection.
So, you are right, that did happen, it was an infamous VHS tape at the time....

This is the greatest movie on that subject (kind of) that was ever made.

Someone on youtube quoted on that video and said this:

The city and it's morning light are beautiful but.....lol, this is so fake, the car is shifting up to like 6th gear but still apears to be doing only 50 mph max!, and the tires are squealing like it went in to the corner fast, but visually does not appear to be near the limit on corners :/

And I have to agree with them, at 1:15 it sounds like he's absolutely flying and passes that car but it looked like he wasn't going much faster than that little car.

Actual vehicle was a Mercedes-Benz 450SEL 6.9. Dubbed vehicle was probably a Ferrari 275GTB.

The stockholm videos are money. My fav would be the supra vs the cosworth... followed by the 911 for pure sex sound.
