Crossing the border with a car on a trailer

Post by Yellowcar »

So, A guy my brother knows is giving him a non-running Miata.
The car is in Vancouver but is still registered in Washington. (The guy just moved to Canada.)
My brother and I are planning to run up there with my truck to get the car and bring it back.
Anyone know what we are going to need in order to cross the border? I just want to be sure we are well prepared so we don't have any problems.

Thanks for any advise :-)

A) Who is this guy?
B) How well do you know him?
C) Who will be claiming responsibility/ownership for the vehicle?
D) How many potential places are there to hide contraband in an automobile?

Technically speaking, if the vehicle you are talking about still has its valid Washington registration, then it cannot have been registered in Canada.

Getting detail-specific, vehicles imported to Canada from the US - and consequently registered in Canada - must be accompanied by a clear US title that was stamped "de-registered, exported" by US Customs Export Control BEFORE the vehicle left US soil, otherwise the Canadian Federal Registrar of Imported Vehicles (http://www.riv.ca) will not accept the vehicle as having been imported in a valid manner and will refuse to register the vehicle in Canada until their proper process has been followed. There is even a 72 hour holding period between the filing of the bill of sale and the de-registration validation, and they are sticky about it.

ICBC (BC Provincial register of vehicles) --> http://www.icbc.com/contact-us

US side info --> http://www.cbp.gov/xp/cgov/toolbox/cont ... a/3004.xml

US Customs and Border Patrol, Vehicle Export Office (Service Port - Blaine Wa.)**
Phone: 360-332-2632
Fax: 360-332-2639
Operational Hours: 8:00 AM-3:30 PM(Pacific)
Weekdays (Monday-Friday)

**The Vehicle Export Office is closed on Federal Holidays and weekends

ONLY fax to (360)332-2639

Having dealt with both offices, I would call the US Customs VEO and inform them about what you are attempting to do, then ask them what documentation they want to see. They would be the ones to confirm whether or not the US title is still valid. After that, call RIV and ICBC to see if the vehicle has been registered in BC.

Fantastic! Thanks for the information!
This is a good friend of my brothers who lived down here and recently moved to Canada for work. My understanding is that the car was never registered in Canada.
Never thought about the contraband aspect
