Not as many L16s out there as there used to be, but mainly depends on the area you live in. Probably more common in the Northwest compared to, say, SoCal. They're still out there, and lots more than L18s, say.

They're powerful enough for a 510. Would put out ~70WHP stock, for a car that weighs ~2000lb.

The L is probably easier to work on compared to the flat four. Easier to access for stuff like plugs or valve adjustments. Not as easy to drop the engine, but you almost never have to drop an L unless you're swapping it.

Waxhaw? Do you live on Old Waxhaw/Monroe Rd. near Bigham Rd? My wife told me about seeing some VW's in a yard there, including a nice light blue one with a roof rack. Was that you? I have my L16 and 4-speed sitting in my father-in-law's garage. It ran fine when removed with a 32/36 downdraft, interested?

We can't have two 510's in Waxhaw.

I drive mine regularily, it's off-white, maybe you've seen it?

Lets go see it, not too far. Hell, I drove my 510 7 1/2 hours Sunday to Cherokee and back to take a set of keys to a friend who lost his in a river and found himself stranded.
