Mullen Automotive Museum

Had the occasion to visit the Mullen Automotive Museum. I'm not a big "old" car guy, nor a big French car guy, which is why it's taken me this long to visit even though it's only one town over from my house. This is 18th-Green-At-Pebble-Beach stuff. Had I known what I'd find inside, I would have visited much sooner.

It wasn't that there were unexpected cars there - pre-war French stuff (and some early post-war stuff), mostly by companies that have long since tightened their last wheel nut. I was surprised, however, and very, very impressed by the level of craftsmanship plainly evident on each of the cars. Down to the headlamps, as you see.

And to think they were taken with my 12-year-old Olympus 2040Z. GREAT fast lens for a PnS (no need for a flash inside, just a steady hand), and only 2.1MP!

Reminds me of the day trip my 10 y/o son and I took last year from Paris to Mulhouse, France via the TGV to visit the former Schlumpf collection (largest collection of Bugattis in the world), since seized by the French government and now called the Cite de l'Automobile. Over 400 cars from all eras: lots of really early stuff before 1900 to the cool '30's art that Julian shows, along with an obscene number of Bugattis (incl TWO Royales) to cool F1 cars from '50s-'70s, all the way to a new Veyron. It just goes on and on and on. And we spent the entire day there with only about 10 other people. Alas, no Datsun 510s.
