2014's hottest places in Australia so far
Wednesday January 15, 2014 - 18:59 EDT
As parts of Australia swelter through scorching temperatures, take a look at the hottest places throughout the month of January.
The highest temperature ever recorded in January was in 1960, when the mercury rose to 50.7 at the small South Australian town of Oodnadatta, on the edge of the Simpson Desert.

That record has been challenged, but not yet broken.
Jan 1
Tarcoola Aero, SA, 48.9
Tarcoola, about 416 kilometres north-west of Port Augusta, is a pretty quiet town. There are few permanent locals, but there is a train line and the Ghan regularly passes through.
Eighty kilometres down the road at the Kingoonya pub, John Brett says it was much cooler on New Year's Day - around 44 degrees.
"It didn't seem too bad here," he said.
"I don't think I even had a customer."

Jan 2
Moomba Airport, SA, 49.3
Moomba, about 770 kilometres north of Adelaide, is home to a huge gas plant and gas field run by Santos.

Jan 3
Walgett Airport, NSW, 49.1 ( that's over 120F)
Walgett is a small farming town in north-west NSW about 350 kilometres north-west of Tamworth.
Exactly 100 years ago, to the day, the town recorded its highest ever temperature of 49.2 degrees. On January 3 this year, the mercury failed to match that record by just 0.1 degree.

Jan 4
Lochington, Qld, 45.7

The Kirby family on Lochington Station, south-west of Emerald in central Queensland, have been working through the heat all month.
"It wasn't too bad doing the water run in an air-conditioned Toyota," Lachy Kirby said of conditions on January 4.
He says they have ways of beating the heat, like starting early and finishing later.
"Take a longer lunch - watch the cricket," he said.

Jan 5
Emu Creek Station, WA, 45.0
Emu Creek Station is a cattle station is in the heart of the Pilbara, outside of Carnarvon, with a population of three.
Earlier that week, the station had reached 46 degrees.

Jan 6
Learmonth Airport, WA, 46.1
Learmonth, near Exmouth, is used as a RAAF "bare base" that can support operational and exercise deployments when required.
Learmonth has sweltered this month. On the days after January 6, temperatures hit an unbearable 44.4, 46.2, 48.1 and 46.9 degrees.

Jan 7
Leonora, WA, 44.6
The township of Leonora lies 230 kilometres north of Kalgoorie and is home to about 1,500 people.
Since peaking at 44.6 degrees, the temperature in Leonora has exceeded 41 degrees every single day.

Jan 8 and 9
Onslow Airport, WA, 48.7
Onslow, in Western Australia's Pilbara, was Australia's hottest place for two days this month, with temperatures of 48.7 and 48.2.
The coastal town has a population of about 660 and is also home to a salt mine.

Jan 10
Learmonth Airport, WA, 46.9
For the second time this month, Learmonth was again the hottest place in the country.

Jan 11
Murchison, WA, 47

The Murchison Shire, in the central part of WA, is known as "the shire with no town".
The shire's 200-strong population is scattered throughout the region, running vast sheep stations and pastoral properties.
The region remains in drought and in need of rainfall.

Jan 12
Kellerberrin, WA, 47.5 or Meka Station WA, 50+
While the Bureau of Meteorology says Kellerberrin, east of Perth, took the January 12 record, the owner of Meka Station, about 500 kilometres north, disagrees.
And he even has photographic evidence.
According to Neil Grinham, the property owner and president of the Yalgoo Shire, it was more than 50 degrees in the shade.

Jan 13
Paraburdoo Aero, WA, 45.8
Paraburdoo is a mining town about five-and-a-half hours' drive inland of Karratha.
The town sits on the edge of the desert, near Western Australia's Hamersley Ranges, so it is no surprise it gets warm.

Shire councillor in Paraburdoo, Linton Rumble, says some mining companies conducted hydration tests on its workers.
"If they don't meet the requirements on the test that they do, they have to stay in a cool environment and drink water for up to a period of time until they pass it," he said.
"I was only talking to one chap... He drank that much water he couldn't eat lunch."
Its hottest temperature on record is 48.9 degrees.

Jan 14
Results not yet out
While official results are not yet in, forecasters say the South Australian town of Keith is likely to be one of the hottest, with temperatures up to 47.2 degrees.

The rest of the state also suffered, with Adelaide recording its fourth hottest day on record.
Adelaide is where we live.

Tomorrow we are up for 46c in Adelaide.
fortunately we live 40k South by the beach so its a few degrees cooler.

Morning Baz,

Funny, I turned on the news this morning, and there is Australia burning again.

The weather and patterns are changing everywhere. I have watched a small glacier that we hike to, get smaller and smaller over the years. If things go as projected, it will be GONE in another 10 years.

So far, Vancouver is having a more or less normal winter, other than lack of snow for the most part in the mountains. One of our larger resorts on Vancouver Island has yet to open ( after record snow falls the last few years ), and at this point, likely will NOT open for what is left of the ski season.

temperature here has been running around 5 - 12 on average here the last few weeks.

Basically had highs of 80°F all week here in SoCal. Not bragging...this is January, not May!
