Project 510(yah i got no good name for it)

Post by 13sDatsun510 »

well thought id post an log my sort of project even though its in its almost 4th year, still no clue on how to attach pics so ill just post links to pics on my other page. anyways as some of you already know i have a project 1979 datsun 510 #7of78 made from the Yokohama, Japan factory then shipped to here in North America, i belive its been a Canadian car its entire life living here on the west coast(can tell by the amount of rust an where theres rust in unusual places).

MORE PICS AND INFO FOUND HERE:http://www.cardomain.com/ride/853868

These are just an all around view of the exterior as it sits(pics were taken back in april so the grille isnt painted in the pics) also shown is the custom rear window and the aluminum trunk floor...sits low but i can just cut it an get it rewelded back up.

At first i figure itd take a minor tune up replace the rear window and drop in a new gastank...well i was wrong ive had to order a custom made rear glass due to not find a window that fits(i belive i have a pl510 glass under my bed right now some guy figured it would fit my car an said it was for a 79...what a dick its a half inch to small all around) anyways the gastank i spent over 2 years searching for a replacement then said screw it an bought a racing fuel cell from Summit Racing since id probibly want more fuel then stock for longer road trips and racing purposes, the cell is a 16gallon so i belive 4-5 more then original.

Here some pics of the what i belive is a stock L20B havent torn it apart yet so can give you any pics of description of parts or part #s sorry BUT this engine will be getting parted out in the near future or sold complete w/tranny, also shown is a engine dress up kit, ive repaint the valve cover gloss black an sanded off the lettering so it stands out, also shown is the summit racing fuel cell and the rear 4link suspension

4-link rear suspension also the PO's idea of an exhaust...a cherry bomb.

The interior when i got it well that was trashed nothing was bolted in, bolts were missing, you name it...even found a few things living in there. due to no rear glass for so long an when i purchased it i had to put plastic and ducttape over it that did nothing really an moisture still got in, ruining alot of the carpet and interior panels. the carpet is gone i will just make a new one or not even bother with one seeing as itll be a street/strip/track car kinda want less weight. So ill be replacing the dash with an aluminum or fiberglass piece nothing fancy just a simple plain NASCAR inspired dash with all the nescessary gauges, right now i have just some crappy brand volt/oil/water/RPM gauges, would love to get some AutoMeter Carbon series gauges. The seats are trashess need to be restored im just gonna store them and either have them restored an sell them or sell them as is, gonna replace them with lightweight racing seats...kinda leaning towards Carbon Fiber i love the look of it an would love to have my interior as much of it as possible.

Interior changed not by much i repainted the dash alot had to modify the radio plate to accept a CD player, the seats i recovered myself(first time at sewwing and upholstery) i just used blankets from a store in town an cut to shape an size then sewn together.

iEquus triple guage pod and RPM tach i have a Oil/Volt/Water temp setup with an 8k rpm tach.

The dash before i went fully black...didnt enjoy the two-tone, also shows the cd player hole in the radios old location.

As for my exterior nothing has really changed since i got it, the PO had painted it a metallic gunmetal silver and its peeling, bubbling and cracking over the areas he had bondoed...so im gonna take it down to bare metal patch the bondo areas with metal an make it all solid again then prep the body for paint an just paint it a quick flat black till i can afford a better paintjob or i might just leave it. The grille had orignally come with little to none airflow to the radiator so it being a hardened plastic(damn nissan for going cheap) i cut out the inserts of the "honeycomb" and increased airflow by atleast 75% aswell as made the car alot more agressive. I then cleaned it up an painted it a Hot Rod Flat Black, it came with metal trim pieces which i havent put on yet i might keep them off or use a high grit an polish them up an paint them a transparent blue an clear coat them, go with a diffrent look.

The wheels so far are what came with it there a Cragar 320 series i belive and they look alright just arent my style, i found a company here in BC in Maple Ridge that sells Work Wheels an i wanna go with the Equip 3s in a 14x9Front and 14x11.5Back, reason so wide in the rear is i have a buddy talking to his buddy about a ford 302 with a carb setup and 5spd tranny that i wanna buy off him itll require a whole dif rear suspension setup(which was gonna happen anyways aswell as a mini-tub for maximum wheel clearence) then im looking to salvage a few parts from a wrecked car, just your basicl IRS so i can modify the dif by having a shaft mounted in a drive tube thats welded to the dif(think a dana 60 axle or any sort of 4wd straight axle) anyways of that will be the main wheel driveshafts(cv axles) to i have no idea yet but probibly custom drive spindles an steering knuckles unless i luck out an can pull something out of my ass an it be a miracle.

So far right now money is tight do to the time of year and me still in school(im only 21 so bare with me here an no dont think ill give up on this car an not bother with the project) this car has become a true love and passion which im sure you all know very well so i will post progression as it happens.
