Hello, it's Nic from Houston. I currently drive a 2006 GTO. However, I have always loved classic imports, so I think I want to finally buy one. I am looking at either a Datsun 510 or a 240z. I am leaning towards the 510, however. I don't know how the reliability is on them though. I have heard mixed things. I just want a "slower" (than the goat that is) car that can handle well and I can drive fast with out actually going fast... if that makes any since. I just dont like having to go 100+ to row through the gears in the goat. I don't think I will be modding the 510 when I get it though. At least not THAT much.

Welcome. You should get 510! But how reliable do you expect a 40 year old car to be? Unless you buy one that has been gone through and the engine is up to par. Or you do it yourself.

Yeah, 510s are what the previous owner has made them, they're neither reliable or unreliable in and of themselves today as virtually none are original anymore (and certainly none that will meet your speed/handling criteria). The closer to stock you keep it, the more reliable it will be.

Have you driven classic cars such as a 510 or Z? They are miles away from a new GTO...they're even miles away from a modern Honda Civic. How are you fixed for mechanical knowlege? Even a reliable 510 will need constant maintenance, and most need work besides. As said above, they are 40-year-old vehicles that have (in most cases) passed through many hands.

Yes, I was thinking they wouldn't be reliable. Thats okay though. I just want a cool car to accompany the GTO. Ill keep the GTO as my daily driver. And maybe drive the 510 every once and a while to work. Mainly keep it for the weekend. I just have always dreamed of having a classic import and drooled over e30 BMW coupes and 510's. Not what I said. They can be utterly reliable, depending on the condition the previous owner kept it in. One fellow here, Qwik510, bought a car from a guy and drove it across the US in as-bought condition. Many other stories like that, as well. Then there are swapped cars with tens of thousands of dollars of work done to them that couldn't make it home from the shop.

You could DD a 510 if it was built and maintained to do so. I did a 45-mile one-way commute in a KA 510 I built.

That said, if you haven't bought the 510 in that first link, kick yourself, then go and buy it before someone else does. That is mint.
