81 510 wagon Pedal assembly?
I just picked up a running driving 81 510 wagon for the princely sum of $0.00. I went to look at it and he said if i do some welding on his 81 Corolla wagon I can have it. Sweet...done deal.
Unfortunately, this Z20 powered beast is autotragic and I don't have a lot of experience with this vintage of 510.
I would like to convert it to manual, but is this like a PL510 where I can just change the brake pedal and add a clutch pedal or do I need the whole pedal box?
Anyone out there know much about these beasts?

Well, I just learned something from your photos, I thought all quad square light A510's came with Z22E motors. Now you have proved me wrong here.
I've just researched the topic, and articles I have found do not list the Z22 as being available at all in the HL510 platform. But I know I've seen the 8 plug Z22 in an HL510 - could this have been a very well done swap in a beater car?

As far as I know none of the A510's came with an E motor at all. :^)
I think they were all S.
It is possible that someone put a Z22 in, not hard to do at all.
I have a Z22E from my 83 200SX sitting here, begging me to put it into something, Hmm.
But I was thinking more like KA24DE.

That!!! is a survivor! Keep it running.
The Z22 was used in the '81 720s and the S110 only and were all 8 plug. The '81 Z20 (E or S) were all 4 plug in Canada. In the States they were 4 plug Z20 in '80, but Canada kept the L20B motor for that year. The American '81 had 8 plug and all Californian '80 and '81 Z20s were 8 plug. I have two 4 plug Z20E heads, which doesn't mean much as they look identical to the 8 plug Z22 heads I have from 720 trucks... both Z20 and Z22 have the injector notches in them.

That's interesting. I have never seen a 4 plug head on a Z series. I know they exist, just never seen one. I always thought they were an American only thing.datzenmike wrote:That!!! is a survivor! Keep it running.

Anyone have a clutch and brake pedal for one of these things?

Thanks for the update. I used to have an 81 510 5spd hatchback, so i'm curious how this turns out. Hope to find one here in Austin to start on.

Re: 81 510 wagon Pedal assembly?
Bringing this thread back from the dead. I finally found a manual pedal box. Local ice racer was parting out his spare part HL510 and kindly donated the pedal box. This car has now moved up slightly in the queue. Right behind my 1000 and before my next 510.

So there is another 510 owner in MB! Whats this you say about ice racing? Never knew we had that round here, let alone a classic series?

Re: 81 510 wagon Pedal assembly?
Now you just need a 5 speed. Measure (horizontally) the length of your auto... it should be 31.5" from engine to the end of the aluminum case where the drive shaft enters. Verify this and the 5 speed from an S110 ('80-'83 200sx) or any '81 and up 2wd gas powered 720 will fit and use the auto driveshaft. Careful, some later 720s had a shorty 5 speed. These 5 speeds were all used on a Z series engine and so will bolt up to your Z20. Best mid ratios are on the '82-'83 S110 with the Z22 motor and 2wd 720 trucks.
You will still need:
Clutch master and the push rod to the clutch pedal.
Hard line and flex hydraulic line to the slave cylinder. (make your own from a suitable length pre made brake line)
A slave cylinder if one does not come with the 5 spd.
A clutch arm if one does not come with the 5 spd.
Clutch arm dust boot if one does not come with the 5 spd.
A 200mm or 225mm L or Z series flywheel with matching 200 or 225mm pressure plate/clutch disc and the matching 200mm or 225mm release bearing collar.
Release bearing
Pilot bushing for inside the end of the crank.
Shift lever/dust boot if one does not come with the 5 spd.
Be sure to remove the small crank spacer used on all Nissan automatics. Flywheel will not bolt on properly if not.
You can use the two piece engine plate from the automatic on a standard. This is the thin metal plate sandwiched between the block and the transmission.
Your speedo cable should work with the 5 spd., but the drive pinion in the automatic will not swap to the standard.
There is a vacuum line from intake to the automatic to modulate shifts... this must be located and plugged.
You will need to connect the two automatic interlock wires together or the starter will not engage.
The reverse light wires will need to be attached to the 5 spd. reverse switch. Reverse lamp switch is just to the rear of the clutch arm about half way up the tranny side.

Re: 81 510 wagon Pedal assembly?
Hi evlevo, Actually there are a bunch of us. Also known as DAM - Datsun Autoclub of Manitoba. A bunch of 510ers and odd collection of other Datsun owners. There is also a forum, Datsun Owners Of Manitoba - http://www.datsunmb.com/forums/
Thanks for the info datzenmike, I'm either gonna swap in the Z22E from my 200sx or just put a KA in it., but the Z20 is definitely living on borrowed time.
