Any Aircooled VW Fans

Post by Aircooledblue »

Just as the title says, Are there any Aircooled VW fans out here?

My Brother has a 68 Type 1 its his DD

Stock 1600cc its a beater motor got it out of a a 71 that had been setting up since May of 94' did a top end rebuild, then threw it in. Just to get a feeling of how worn the motor is, We run 60w oil in it , When its warmed up and running at about 3000 rpm it only has about 10lbs of oil pressure  Crazy Huh

We have plans of building a 1735cc for it (85.5 MM X 76mm)

My wife's '70. She's had it for 20 years or so. We have the Axis Powers garage going.

Yeah. Felt pretty ballsy compared to the L13 and three-on-the-tree my 510 originally had. Wife's car is about as stock as it gets, if not as original as it left the factory.

When I go outside tommorow im gonna get you a pic of the motor we picked up for 500$ its a turnkey 1600dp with about .0010 play in it factory was like .0007 so its not worn. Since we on the topic how hard is a L16 to get a hold of to rebuild ,Are they powerfull enough for the 510. Also are they easy to work on. Beetles are simple air, fuel, and spark is all it needs

My wife's '69 blue bug popped a fuel supply line out of the carb at 60 mph and set itself on fire!!
I didn't see it as quickly as the trucker behind us flashing his lights. I pulled over, opened the lid and he looked like Pablo Sandoval (Giants third baseman) at his best, big burly dude, moving like a cat, jumped out of his truck and hit the flames in what looked like one smooth move! He put it out with his extinguisher very quickly.
We lost just a little of the rubber stuff!! That carb feed tube was a press fit if I am not mistaken, is that true?
She loved that thing, still wants one, never mind it's incendiary personality!!.

When we ( me and my brother ) were putting this motor I routed the fuel line wrong and set right on heat riser for the carb he didn't see it and it caught on fire while sitting in our driveway idling I was 14 at the time and didnt instant the concept of fuel lines  , and I don't think that its a pressed fit his just has a hose clamp on it

I've owned 3 VW

73 bug

63 bug

And I just picked up a 64 camper

All of them for free and all drivers. Guess I was meant to be a VW dude. They are so fucking slow though..... It's painful!!!!

Yeah, it was the brass tube itself that I seem to remember was molded/pressed into the body of the carb, then the hose was clamped onto the tube. And, it seems the tube was straight with no rolled edge to hold the hose on!
