Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
At this point we have determined that #4 has probably got a broken Compression Ring/Rings.
When we put the Leak down in place and pressurized it we had Lots or Oil Vapour from the crank case
spilling out of the Valve cover breather.
Now the decision has to be made replace or repair .
Guess I will park the 510 and start driving the Tiger .

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
Damn it all, I was hoping for better news. The prospect of rebuilding your motor now is a hard hit to take. My heart goes out to you Andrew, because I was there and I know the feeling. SUCKS! I may have gotten a better short term outcome with my motor, but I must say it's a very uneasy sense of relief. I don't know if I can rely on it, to what extent I can push it. or when the inevitable shoe will drop. If anything, this will be an opportunity for you to eliminate these unknowns associated with a used motor. At this moment I'm sure this is a weak consolation, but in the long run confidence is priceless.

That is a bummer but the consolation was the last sentence... Now I get to drive the Tiger. That would be a huge plus in my books Andrew for the remainder of the summer.

Here's a clip from our run yesterday. Crazy fast, and that was only at 7psi with a sick #4!

Andrew,
Nice vid clip..
Sorry to hear about the bad "ticker" but it still sounded pretty good.
Since I've decided to go orange , I've got a better idea what mine will look like.
Very nice. I think i'll copy your. SSS idea for the pillar vents

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
Well I put the SR (Father Car) under its blanket until the New Engine arrives later this winter. And yes I will do a compression check before I load it on the truck. When the engine out I will be able to fix a couple small things that I forgot or didn’t think about the first time around.
In the mean time were going to Get at the ( Son's ) KA swap car and finish it for spring I will add some progress pix when we get going on it.

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
Hey Andrew,
Fantastic build buddy! gives me that much needed motivation as i work endlessly on my labor of love.
quick question about your interior...do you have a pic of it? I see a center console with an arm rest and am very interested in what kind you retrofitted into your 510.
your front seats are alsoa thing of beauty
keep up the great work!

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
The Bad News ....This explains the Blow By issue and low compression. Camera shot of number 4 cyl . Yikes
The Good News a Replacement engine is sitting on the floor next to the car .... and Yes it has good compression on all 4 .

Hey Andrew,
What are your plans for the blown short block? Any chance we might made a deal? In the not so distant future I will be replacing my s13 and I thought it would be a good idea prepare for the inevitable.

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
Hi Ron . I was going to wrap it up and slide it under the bench. I think the $$$ to ship it to you would cancel any deal I could give you. If you want to look into shipping $$ from Canada and feel its not a road block we can talk .

Re: Father and Son 510 Builds
New engine is in Yippeee. Couple issues small and just throw money at it.
Small. The VVT Gear in the new engine was noisy off of idle it sounded like a bad lifter. Pulled the cam and installed the gear in from my spare SR and all is good.
Or at least I thought it was.
Throw Money at it... The turbo was pushed a little hard by the previous owner and aparently it spit a couple ceramic balls out. ( Ceramic balls dont like 14+lbs )
the previous owner had it in th 20lb range. This caused an oil leak into the exhaust chamber of the turbo massive smoke at idle.
$700.00 and Cherry Turbos in St Thomas Ontario has me back up and running.
I have put 300k on it and all seems good.
