PL510 VIN Number production dates

Post by Byron510 »

This came up in another thread, but I thought this information should be shared in a thread that’s easy to find – so…

Listed below of the VIN#’s for each model year up to 1971. This information is published in Nissans publication:
Datsun 1600,1400,1300, USA and Canada Parts Catalog, Model 510 Series
Pub. No. C-0040U
Master Binder December 1973

So would conclude that the information contained here in should be about as accurate as it gets.
Enjoy…

And listed here are all of the available modes –I had no idea there were so many available models…

One day I would like to pay someone to carefully remove the binding from this publication and properly scan this book and make an electronic form – the information contained within really should be public for the sake of keeping all of our 510’s in good shape. These books are worth a fortune, but I’ll be honest, the information shouldn’t have to be paid for with access by only a few. .. a future project.

Byron, I've done similar in the creation of the Datsun 510 CD. It's time-consuming, but not difficult work. The real money (if necessary) would be in the scanning software to render the text searchable - Some versions of Acrobat will do this. I didn't have that back in 2001, so I scanned 'em all as images.

What sizes are the pages? The Parts Catalog was a real oddball size, and didn't even completely fit on my then-legal-size scanner. I have only an 8.5x11 scanner these days, but if that works and you're interested in sending it my way, I'd do the labor for free.

Can I assume from the info here that the 510 2dr I just picked up is a 1968? The vin reads PL510072860. The door tag is illegible. It has spear front fender markers and bullet rear fender markers.

'68 will have suicide wipers and no rear fender markers (and different dash). Pics?

Looks like after 40,000 it would be a '69.

As in - did the book ever get copied.
No, but the book remains happily on the shelf... once in a while referenced and posted here on the Realm when questions come up. :-)

In The 510 Archives there's a '70 version updated through June in PDF format:

Datsun Sedan PL510..... 2950003 (from August '71)

I assume the 610 followed right behind the cessation of the 510 which was before Jan 1st '73??? Isn't there a saying that all '73 wagons were made in '72??? Or was that 2dr? Any car with a build date of Aug '72 on would be a '73 model year.

I have some info from Nissan that lists the earliest 610 under "up to July '73' having the 'new' L18.

For the newest 510, there has been a long running thread I started many years back. This may be as good of a place to link to it as any;

http://the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f= ... Newest+510

I have been told that the L18 was installed in the 510 for the ‘73 model year. It was a limited run, but enough production to allow BRE and other teams to run this engine in competition in 72. You may recall the Mike Downs car is mentioned to have this engine in BRE video.
I was told by the one of the 510 Club of BC founding members that the L18 came only in 2drs with the automatic. This is unsubstantiated, as I have yet to see this in Nissan publications, and I have not seen an original L18 engine plate documented in a 510. And to be honest, these days with the quality of the reproduction under hood rating plates, I’m not sure if you could tell the original from a reproduction anymore. But it would be very interesting to document an actual L18 production 510.

The L18 was definitely on these shores in race cars during the 72 season as noted in the Against All Odds movie.

1979 is the A10 as you can see in the chassis number you gave. Known as the HL510. Looks like they used the W for wagon again.

Not the same chassis, but Datsun/Nissan used the same marketing model name of 510.
