Kinda rear brakes are you running? If drums, have you adjusted them recently? If not, it might take a big of the sponge out of the pedal.

200sx disc. The fronts might have buddles still, ill try it again with the one man bleeder. That high speed missed seemed to be a plug wire to close to the compressor. It'd get hot and miss. All good now

I got orders to Virginia in the winter and we set off a few days ago. I drove the 510 loaded down with uniforms and household stuff while the family drove the explorer. The car did well, averaged 15 on the A/F ratio and made lots of power. Only snafu the first day was the front left wheel came a little loose. Retorqued in hotel parking and life went on. Day before yesterday, she drove great for 600 miles until I turned into an off ramp and put it in neutral. Car died instantly. It started after every fuel stop with a flick of the key. This time, nothing.. it would turn over fine, fuel in the rail, plugs looked fine buy dry. It had spark but looked week.
I gave up after an hour and had triple a tow it to a reputable place in Amarillo TX. The next morning the mech said he had it running but horribly. He said distributor and CAS were at fault which was fees able by my troubleshooting as well. When the "new" one came in he made the discovery that the teeth on both gears were shot. Which is hard to believe. I put the old dist in and it would slightly make contact on the gear teeth then skip right off. The newer dist has prefect teeth but would still skip occasionally.
Since time was a factor to check into my new command , I parked it in storage promising to come back soon with a dolly. Uhaul won't rent dollys to explorers... so some time after getting my new house updated I'm going to have to drag her up and change the gear out. This 510 will not be in my life much longer after that....

Hey Finn,

Sorry to hear about the ignition failure. I've not heard of a KA CAS gear set stripping. I'd suspect that at some time prior to your ownership of the engine it was subject to some hard living. Or your turbo torque stripped it!

Julian, I wasn't completely sold on his expertise but the gear on the dist was worn. But worn enough? ...

Over the last few day I changed the distributor and spark plugs and set the timing. Took a few tries, but got the motor to fire up like normal but it had a bad knock. I tried adding some oil and letting the heat soak the upper end but it still knocked after half hour. I talked with the new neighbor and killed another half hour and tried to start it again and it would a temp to start. I checked timing and it hadn't changed. I flushed the fuel rail, no change. Each plug is getting spark.. etc.. I changed the plugs because they were carbon soak, could have been the issue from the get go.

I had this thing listed locally for sale because we're knee deep in a home remodel but now it seems as though it's not worth it to sell the girl cheap just because I'm busy now. So plan is to pull this efi nightmare out and go carburetor. The turbo is more then likely to end up as a rear mount to the Sierra pickup I aquired recently. It has a 4.3 but towed the 510 1700 miles without issue. Not bad

Finally got some time to spend on the dime. I started pulling everything off the head assuming it had a bent valve. I pulled the front cover off for the sprocket gears and found the idler was loose. The bolts threads were stripped. Hopefully the teeth inside are manageable with a new bolt, not sure if I can install a helicoil or insert inside there.

Finn LIVES!

A little blue loctite wouldn't go amiss.

The idler bolt is a weak point on the KA from my experience. I have helicoiled them a couple of times with good success.

Yes Julian, I'm still alive, in Virginia :?
But more importantly, the 510 is ALIVE!!!!

I swapped that bolt and added some fresh gas and the beast came alive. I think I'm a tooth off for timing but she's running. I'm so happy  a loose bolt, who knew...
This is her in her catatonic state:/ had lots of home remodeling before her.

Thank you Spencer for the upgrades. You are a good man
