Knox Mountain 2015

Post by Chickenman »

Just wonder who's going up to Knox this year to run or spectate?

Don West and I are heading up in the 280Z on Friday morning. Hopefully around 9:30 Am to 10:00 AM at the latest. Anyone else going and want to Tag along?

I'm heading up early Saturday morning, leaving my place at four AM, will be there when gates open, have some pan cakes and do some hiking. See you up there. I'm going to say hi in the pits, then work my way up to the top for the second runs of the day.

I will watch for you guys, be nice to see you and Don!

Morning World, 3:00 Am here, going to be a 510 day as I call them, 12+ hours, where today it will be at least 15 hours for sure, for the days trip.
I will be leaving here at 4:00, should be at the gate by 7:30, have the pancake breakfast and enjoy the day. Weather looks to be ok, hiway should be clear. Some stupid traffic stuff yesterday afternoon for those trying to clear Vancouver. Glad I don't have to do that any more.
I will take lots of pictures and post them up tomorrow.

Everybody drive safe!

Looks like 2015 results are up.

http://www.knoxmtnhillclimb.ca/results/ ... verall.pdf

New GTO record of 1:48.344 goes to Wouter Bouman in his 3 rotor FD RX7. Guess the MGB is gonna need some more HP!!

Campbell Carlyle came oh so close to reclaiming the SP4 Record with a 1:55.258.

Talking to Joe Cheng, it sounds like John is pretty much retired. He is after all 72 now. His Butt kicking foot is probably sore after all these years....

...the one you took a picture of. You two guys must have been within 50 feet of each other but neither recognized the other...

You're not the first guy to make that mistake Bert - been there, done that!

Wow....1982...my first run at Knox. I had walked and watched it the year before and thought, hey, this could be fun. Little did I know that 14 years later I had been bitten by the BUG!

My friend Dave and I talked to each other on the drive up, telling ourselves to take it easy, but, he had old, cold tires and wrote his 510 off in Turn 5 on his second run. ( If you have heard this story,...sorry ).

as you can see, it was pre-flares. Then, in 1983 I had my oops at Westwood, so when the car was finished, with flares and real deal tires and suspension, I concentrated on the B.C. Solo Championships. After I knocked off 4 of those in a row, it was than back to Knox, to try for the elusive sub 2 minute category.

I was so lucky I never crashed at Knox, when you look at all the 510 written off there, and most of the guys I knew/know, all have had crashes.

Other than a couple of bad call years with the TOO BIG TURBO, and bald race tires, i really had a good go at it.

Incredible video! Brian Elliot did that? Good Lord, he's still the videographer guy and still doing the Datsun thing here in Calgary. I'll have to see if he has any more that old video to share.

Better yet, 82 was the first year I went to Knox. I have a ton of still pics from then. I'll see if I can find them and scan them in. I seem to remember a LOT of 510's on the hill that year. And maybe a go kart?

Go Carts never "officially" ran. They came up as demonstration only. A fellow with an insanely fast shifter cart came one year, Ed Leach was his name. I ran into him at a car show a few years ago, and he said he scared himself silly and if he had known what it was like beforehand, he would never have run.

There was a guy here this year with a drone filming at turn 3, I would like to see that video when done.

Second time I ran Knox I rented a Sony VHS camera that was the size of a dresser drawer. Over time, most of us killed VHS cameras as the vibration through our rolls bars just killed the tape heads.

I would be cool if you had a picture of my car there, on the hill. I was so focused, that I took very few pictures
