justins (maybe track) car

Post by MikeY »

I thought that now the 68 was mostly done I might as well jump right into the next project. My son Justin drove the 68 while at BCIT and seemed to like the car and attention. As well we both autocrossed my lz2.3 4 dr and he beat me at boundry bay (it was close) lol. So now that he is working and making good money he wanted me to build him a car. He would like to use it as a drivable street car he can autocross and maybe do Knox mt in. We also both have dreamed of the nfld targa but that's pushing it. I also would like to keep it eligiable to run with sovern but I'm not sure what level of mods they accept. For now I am going to build stock front struts and a pait of 280zx. They would swap in and out easily. I just purched a 2dr some might remember. Deans old purple car has seen better days but still has a trunk, floors ,d pretty solid inner fenders. I have been hoarding parts for a 2dr build so don't need much. I have to decide weather to buils a lz2.2 I have mostly done or. L18 I have kicking around. I figured I shouls post some before shots as well as a pic of the factory gland nut tool I have to take the strut inserts out with. I bought a box of factory tools years ago and this has been the handiest.

Tube bender is ready to go Mike...

It's been close to 20 years since I have seen Deans car, you're right - time hasn't been kind!

My vote is to spend time on the bigger engine, or go KA...

Well it looks like it's been a while since I've updated this build. I did a lot of welding to get it to a usable shell. That was over a year ago. I sprayed a thin coat of paint on the shell and roughed the bodywork on the rest. I kept the shell in a shelter and am just now getting around to fitting the doors, trunk and hood. I hope to have it painted completely while I have it in the.shop. then back to the shelter to await funds to reassemble.

I picked up a 28,000 km l16 for $400. I think I will get it running with that. Then my son can decide what way he wants to go himself. I have the l18 and a 2.2 here. It will come down to money. He is now a dad and wants to buy a house, with a garage,I hope. As he's working in Alberta there is some uncertainty. I will give him a stockiah platform. I have 1100lb springs in the rear and 250lb on shortened front stock struts. A 4.11 LSD and a penultimate cross member. I'd like to see him get it fuel injected. Ive been collecting parts. I just need him.to spend some coin and figure out mega squirt. Time will tell
We still talk about a cage. So maybe before I install glass and headliner we will have to make that decision.

MegaSquirt - Mike.... give me a call :)

www.mackaypowerproducts.com - we'll figure out your 280ZX at the same time :) (Speaking of which I'm parting out another 280ZX - need anything before Byron pilfers it all lol )

Well I guess I'm getting serious. I just broke out a nos fender. I did some rust repair on the pass side fender but I fear it will return. I can't hourde perfect parts forever. Now that new fenders are available I guess I can let go. And how many more cars am I going to restore. The pic might not show the factory green prer but.you can see a couple of holes to weld up. I'd never put rocker trim on a car again and I never bolt the bumper to the fender. This one had a little damage from storage. (not me) so I've picked my worst one.

Spent a few days working on quater Windows. They are a bit of a pain to take apart. But the glass is out and I think I can save all the rubber. The brackets for the latch are off to chrome and new latachs are ordered from Nissan. $175 all in for the 2 latachs. And $100 to chrome all 4 brackets. Ive never ordered the latches so am not sure what they include. It will make it easier to paint. I'm not a fan of taping and masking something up if there is another way. And the brackets in the window were rusty and the only way to get them out is to remove the glass.

Well it's been a while. The shell is painted and doors and fenders as well. I installed the engine, tranny, driveshaft and diff. The half shafts are having the ujoints replaced. Picked up the recorded rad. 3 core now. I pushed the car out and.painted some things black. Them color coat the hood, trunk lid and front valance in a few days. The headliner is on route from headliner Mart. And datsport just sent new windshield gaskets. I'm trying the no trim ones. Nissan supplied new door handles, window felt and the drivers side door seal. Had to reuse the pass side. I know everyone like pictures.

Might have to change the thread title. We have downgraded it a bit. No cage and a l20b to start. I've bought springs from specialty and porterfield shoes and pads. Just keeping it simple and get it running. Justin can enjoy it for a while and upgrade it as he figures out how he is going to use it. He has just bought a shop with a house attached in Airdrie. So when we drive it East this fall I hope to connect with some of the Calgary Datsun guys. At least it will be warm and dry. It would have been in a damp Costco shelter here.

Well I've tackled the headliner and installed the gloss black firewall assemblies. I will satin coat black the dash cage and heater box. I had a late 69 in the junk yard and.am using that wiring harness. My thought is there are far less unnecessary relays. I just have to build the tach subharness and wire up the ei dizzy. The trimless windshield gaskets arrived in record time. Thanks Tracy and Baz. New window felt from Nissan and nos inner and outer door window wipes make the door glass job a breeze. I found a local locksmith to rekey my locks. It seems the tru k lock has the code, so he made a key for it and rekeyed the rest. A 510 with one key. Wow what a novel idea. And only $140 CDN. The quater windows went together easy enough. I reused the rubber but replaced the latches with nos and rechromed the brackets.
