1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
Hey just read through your thread wicked sweet build. I wanted to ask you about your fender flair that you used you brushed over it just briefly and i want to ask how you went about it. Im looking into doing something similar what the rears on mine. Did you fab the new flairs in over the old or cut it out completely and weld in the new? any pics of the process would be swell also

There used to be some good pics of his build, but they were lost when the site switched formats. I think he used VW GTi flares (steel replacement panels) for his flares. BAZ did a similar flare setup on OZDAT using Alfa steel flares: http://www.the510realm.com/phpBB3/viewt ... f=3&t=2966

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
I had a seperate thread going on how I did the steel flares on this car so I could retain the use aof the rear doors on the 4 door.

Is this 510 possibly the same one that I came across on Paul Sveda's blog? If I'm correct your from Ontario too- and he took that photo in Milton? Its a beautiful Targa rally car and how I had envisioned restoring a 510 before I even saw this one. Way to go, you've done a very nice job.

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
Thats, very, very cool.... I admire your 510 greatly. I live in Flamborough just south of you, I'm 16 and I just bought my first 510 from a guy who builds Mitsubishi's for Targa. My 1972 4 door 510 is a former Canadian Rally Championship car and I hope to restore it to a street legal rally car. I will hopefully start a resto thread on the forum soon. I haven't been able to find any 510's in Ontario for parts or sale but you say there is a whole bunch in Georgetown alone, I must be looking in all the wrong places. If you could hook me up with some sources for parts or even a whole donor car that would be awesome....hope to here from you soon, thanks.

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
Rumor has it that the original Grasshopper may be getting another life. I am currently working out the best way of rebuilding it and should have some pics posted soon.

Bob, that's awesome news, and I'm so glad to see that you are back on the site after many years missing in action!
And coming back to say that you are rebuilding the Grasshopper is even better! I see that you have updated your avatar , though. So do you have AC in your garage?
So in your retirement, are you planning to use the Grasshopper in some local motorsport events? Or will it just be built to survive the wonderfully, ever changing road conditions in your new home?
Really look forward to the updates. And of course photos as well.

Re: 1973 Datsun 510 SR20DET Targa Rally Car
Actually I am currently visiting family in Ontario and have been staying with one of my son's for a few weeks to work on this. I don't have access to a shop but working on it inside a 24' car trailer. I have made some good progress. I stripped out both the donor shell and the rally car and after a lot of contemplation and a few beers decided to rebuild the original Grasshopper. The areas of heavy fabrication are all straight and undamaged so it is easier just to redo the major sheet metal in large chunks (roof, trunk, passenger rocker and floorpan by cutting the necessary pieces from the donor. I have some pieces from the donor Mexican car to go on as well so it will have dual "citizenship" and be able to move freely across the borders.

You are a very neat worker.
Maybe you will be able to buy land in Mexico in the cars name?
Never seen that particular view of the car, thanks for that.

This car has family history for you, in a way it's cool that you will be keeping it....sort of!
Man, I do look forward to this Bob.
Besides we have been lacking some good projects lately on the site. Seems to be a bit of a slow time for many, only a few people are making progress with their projects.
