Team, I've been chasing a hesitation issue like a madman. The wagon is choking up under acceleration.
I took the engine from bone-stock and swapped out the OE carb for a Weber 32/36 DGV, new plugs, new wires, Pertronix EIM, Pertronix Coil, I think I timed it right, new mechanical fuel pump, new fuel filter. Still have issues.
I uploaded a video to Youtube, here:

Let me know what you guys think.

Play in the distributor shaft? It sounds really lopey too.

Check fuel pressure and accelerator pump function.

Like zKars said check accelerator pump function. Look down carb and throttle the carb. You should see a nice stream of fuel shooting into the throat like a good piss behind the garage after a few beers. If that's good then I would pull the top of the carb off and see if the fuel bowl level is correct, if that's good its overly lean and time for jetting oh that should be fun.

Maybe these cutaways will help.
Also, how old is this carb? If not new, check that the "booster" venturi's are tight, specially in the primary. The booster venturi is the thing that goes across the top of the inlet in the primary barrel. They loosen up over time.

Chokes up? No. If anything it's not getting enough gas.
Revving in neutral doesn't really put anywhere near enough load on it. Try driving it. Bet it falls on it's face when you add throttle from idle.

Put a wide band on it.. sounds like you have lean condition.

Y'all. This post is very late; but, always check your vacuum lines for dry-rot.
After months of chasing his issue, it turned out to be a vacuum leak. I was on a Weber carb tuning website and the first sentence in all-caps and bold said "CHECK YOUR VACCUM LINES!"
I have obviously learned my lesson.
