Universal Knock sensor.

Post by Chickenman »

Came across this interesting site. A Universal Knock sensor LED module. Fully programmable and can be used with any knock sensor. Single and Dual Channels available.

The Bosch VW/Audi type are easy to find, inexpensive and can be to the block with a 8mm bolt

Adjustable. How do you know if adjusted properly? There's knock, and then there's KNOCK

The US Mileage Option 720 with Z20 has a knock sensor in the block and a small control box under the opera window of the cab. It decides if severe enough and dials the ignition advance back on the distributor.

When you see the rod hanging out that hole in the block....you know it was not enough....

It did say something about using a stethoscope, I'd like to see how well that would work doing 130 MPH going up the Hope Slide for 3 miles.....

I don't trust transistors.....

Jeeze you guys are Negative Nellies sometimes. Did you even bother to read the information. Stethoscope?? Where is that mentioned? It has an input for Ear Phones so you can listen for knock while driving. That's not any different from using an IPOd with headphones while driving. I pretty danged sure I've seen Keith driving at Warp 9 with listening to Radar Love with his IPod. Image

Don't trust transistors?? Better get rid of your Wideband, Transistorized Nissan ignition and your G35 then Keith. Seriously?? Did you forget you are Mr. Gadge? Shame shame shame...

Tuning for Knock hard. Common. Really?? There are tables for voltage values available for different knock sensors. And the manufacturer supplies an easy to use GUI software as well. Far more sensitive than your ear or reading plugs. You're a hell of a lot more likely to damage a Piston by using your ear or reading plugs than using a Knock sensor. And ever heard of a Dyno? You tune Knock sensors on a Dyno just like fuel curves and ignition timing. No different. I seem to recall someone who used something called " The Great Rolling Dyno " years ago to test and tune. Was always trying out new instruments and stuff. What ever happened to that guy??

Really, I'm disappointed in you guys sometimes. You seem to get set in yours ways and don't want to try anything new. Try and post something that you think is helpful and you get raked through the Mud. Sorry if I sound cranky. But I just woke up and haven't had my Coffee. And sometimes you guys do need a " friendly ' smack on the arse... Image

Maybe we're all just getting old, cynical and cranky.. Image

Come to think of it. You really should get rid of your G35 Keith. It's full of nasty transistors. Is probably going to leave you stranded any minute. As a friend, I'll take it off your hands before it becomes a burden. You're welcome

I thought I was just being funny...don't take things so seriously  ..Rob France and I have a thing going about transitors...you don;t know about that...

And, for posterity, I have never used headphones of any type, just my ear plugs.

Maybe it was the cords hanging down from your ear plugs or someone else I was thinking of? Whatever...

Guess I was expecting more of a Positive response. ... like " Gee that's really interesting. Thanks for posting that " . Replies came across as more sarcastic than funny to me..... Maybe more emoticons should be used.... And I did mention that I hadn't had my morning Coffee... Image

:D :D :D HUG>>>HUG>>>>HUG.....

For me, I lived the first of the knock sensors that came out God knows back when...20 years ago...? They gave more false positives, so we never kept using them. That was another reason I just decided to run ( was able with Avgas) proper fuel for my boost level on the street, and just left it at that.

Well, technology has certainly improved since then. It's amazing what all this new AM/FM stuff can do. I just talked to a friend who has a brand new Ford Escort RS. I think there were only 6 imported to BC. This thing has the same engine as the new 2017 Mustang has . 350 HP and 350 ft/lb Torque Turbocharged 2.3 liter 4 banger. That's 350 horsepower that runs on Pump gas, every day, with full warranty, and still gets reasonable mileage. Amazing.

I might have to give Tim Brown a call....

knock sensing is so 1979!

move up to 1999 technology with ion sensing! http://www.fs.isy.liu.se/Publications/P ... 580_LE.pdf

207 Pages!!! Yikes. However, it is very interesting. Brings to question on how Modern engines can alter spark timing for individual cylinders.

My 1998 Audi has a Bosch ME5.3 ECU. It uses dual Bosch Knock sensors. But it can individually adjust cylinder timing values. Modern cars have even more sensitive cylinder timing adjustments. How do they do that?

Misfire detection can apparently also be read via the Spark Plug. It's all AM/FM to me....

Does Ion Knock Sensing require a special Spark Plug or can a regular Spark Plug be used?

Saab Trionic has used Ion Sensing for a long time...

1985 patent to Saab-Scania for ion sensing

Saab Trionic-7, check page 109 and onward for an explanation.

By GM's buying Saab, they acquired the Trionic T5 and T7 systems and the Mecel/Saab patents.

All that said, the best option is to call John and Shirley Pizzuto at J&S Electronics and buy one of their one-stop solutions - they work excellent.

http://www.jandssafeguard.com/

I loaned my J&S Interceptor to James and we put it in his green car until I need it back, (...someday?) - maybe some time you should go for a ride with him in that car and you can put on the headphones and listen for knock.

Hey, there is no shame in driving around in a car with headphones on, listening to the engine... :P
