Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Since you're already running 2.5" pipe, the 4" OD resonators/mufflers will only be .75" closer to the floor. If you have the space, it would help keep the noise down. Magnaflow makes tons of 4" OD round mufflers, and a variety of companies make cheap-to-spendy 3.5"-4" OD resonators. I used a longer version (20" body, 28" long overall) that was billed as "Silverline" but matched the look and features of a number of other brands. Mine was stainless, same shape in mild.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Exhaust is done. Ish.
Painted with high heat alumimum paint. Its just aluminized steel, not stainless.
The three sections are completely removable from the car. To do this, I need a band clamp or slip joint between the muffler and section that passes through the crossmember. That's the mis-aligned joint in this next picture. It does line up once you rotate the cross member through pipe properly...
I also have to hope I left enough room to fit the porsche style Cv's and adapters that are coming...

That hard mount at the rear crossmember is going to add a fair bit of NVH to the cabin all on its own.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
That's a really nice job you did on that exhaust.
You mention adding a resonator can, same thought is going through my mind, im finding a single muffler isn't quite enough.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Progress lately has been of the electrical kind. Just about done running new wiring and adapting in the custom and Z components I've added.
Anybody have any idea where all these wires go? I'm stuck....
Had a lot of "fun" wrestling in the rear glass a week or so ago. I swear the gasket was just a tad too big or thick. Had the same issue with the front. I got the no-chrome trim stuff from (??) We won the fight, but the solution involved some judicious banging and lots of lubrication and sweating. No not that kind....

Big news today. The Z24/L20B hybrid is alive and breathing. Nasty little snarl of thing as expected. Will indeed have to turn up the stereo.
Now if only the lane weren't full of snow and ice,…
Now I have to invent some sort of dash and console so I can make the inside look like a car.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Well I am mightily confused. Put in about 15 litres in the tank before I started it. Fired right up. Ran about 5-10 minutes.
Today I turned on the fuel pump (electric) and noticed the gauge on the fuel rail reads zero. WTF? Opened up a line and turned on the pump, yup, nothing but air being pumped. Little dribble of fuel more like what is on the inside of the hose. Okay..... No way it burned through 15 litres. Something must be plugged.
So long story short, after much testing and finding nothing, I pulled the tank thinking the pickup must be rotted off and can't get down to the bottom. Well, lets just say that weren't it....
Once I looked in the tank, I see the larger 5/16 hardline, the top of the two hardlines sticking out of the tank, ends immediately at the inside of the tank. The smaller 1/4 hardline continues into the tank and bends and stops just off the bottom of the tank. Like it's playing the pickup line. Well I had the rubber plumbed the other way around. Big = feed, small = return.
Now to me, this is backward. Should the larger line not be the feed and the smaller the return? This is the way it is on the Z's.
Can anyone confirm this is the way it is on a stock 510? Small = feed, large = return? Am I crazy? Has my tank been modified? There is no sign of that top large line in the tank having rotted off, it just ends immediately upon entering the tank.
Now what are the chances that I put in JUST enough fuel to cover the "return" hole, and it ran out just about right after causing me to go crazy. Er.

Confirm small feed, large return is stock for 510.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Thanks for that. I suppose it all depends on the fuel system design. There is no "right" here.
I had a local friend look at his 72 automatic tank. He says the return (large) is capped at the tank with what appears to be a factory looking cap. Were return lines an evolutionary thing as well on 510's
Now I'm hoping 1/4 fuel line is enough volume for my massive HP engine. (insert imoji with tougue in cheek here)

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
I am still using the stock line for my LZ motor without issue. It feeds the dual 44's well enough.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Well I have been remiss in my posting duties. I have been slaving 10 hr days for weeks it seems, but I'm nearing the end of the project. It runs, will drive soon. Interior and wiring are near completion. Seat covers off the seats. Put the grill together a couple of days ago to see the face of the thing again for the first time in 3 years. Pretty cute!
Interior door cards to complete, few minor technical items to finish, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Out of province inspection to get through, hopefully I left things to their liking.

Few pictures.
Moon-Eyes mirrors. Chrome, metal, heavy, quality. Fitment and view are excellent Custom interior touches.
Points given for each Z item spotted.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
I took,no, drive! the beast out of the garage today to put it on my driveway for the day to work on someone elses 510 for the day.
Decided to take it for a short run down the lane. Shhhh don't tell anyone. Well the thing is nearly un-drivable! The alignment is totally out of whack, at 15 kph it is trying to throw me left then right into fences. Got it back in the shop and got a look at my alignment. Had a slightly excessive, oh I'd say about 1 inch of tow (toe?) in. Never experienced this amount of driving crazyness.
It was kind of the first time the car was down on its own wheels with a full interior/trunk/gas etc load, so my quicky by-eye alignment wasn't even close. Time to get the QuickTrick sticks out and set this puppu up!
