Just bought 72 510 4dr Auto

Post by datsun.dave »

Hi Guys -
New 510 owner.
Lots of other Datsuns.

Car has 31000 original miles and needs very little. Sat since 96. Started it last weekend. Drove up and down the alley. Now to clean her up and decide where to go from here...

Yup. Dave with a half year. And Dave in Calgary.
Plans are up in the air a little bit... I really want a 510 for the long haul, but this is SOOOOO original, that I am trying to decide whether to keep it and personalize, or sell it as a survivor and use that to fund a driver. I just got her running - and she runs beautifully. Hasn't been on the road since 1996, and needs some sorting, but was garage kept the last 20 years and probably all her life as even the original trunk and windshield rubbers are still nice and pliable.

And does anyone know the differences between 72 and 73? Or the cutoff year or vin? Mine is a 6/72 build. And also wondering if there is a 73 specific wiring diagram because my starter relay has 6 wires and the relay on the 72 diagram only shows 4...

As far as a 73 4dr goes, they don't exist. You have one of the lates examples to roll off the assembly line. I don't have exact figures, it I'm sure they are out there. I suspect that by August 72, production of the 4dr and wagon stopped. This is because the 610 production started in Sept 72 as the 73 4dr sedan and wagon Datsun products for the world. The PL510 2dr however remained in production through February 1973, and the 2drs were the only true 73 models. One 510 model I don't know when stopped production is the Coupe, I am sure someone here has reasearched the exact cut off date for the 510 coupe model.

Cool. Thanks Byron. I found something using the search that looked like a pretty official timeline suggesting mine was definitely a 72 like you suggest. It really is weird that all my wiring colours are goofy and the number of wires on the starter relay is different. Who knows... This car was delivered new in 73 to a local Grandma. (Elsie). I have the "Brasso" Nissan License Plate frame, and a bunch of the original owner documentation up until 1996 when it changed hands for the first time. Based on the registration history, as near as I can tell it hasn't been on the road in 20 years. The fellow I bought it from only owned it for a couple of weeks, having dragged it from the garage of the second owner where it had sat covered. I am piecing together the history...

No worries Dave. The actual month of production is stamped on the ID plate on the driver side door jamb.

If this is missing for some reason, then the date of manufacture on the seat belts (a little white cloth tag sewn onto the belt) is usually within a month of the car leaving the assembly line.

Ya Byron. I found the tag and looked at the seatbelts too. The seatbelts are 04/72 - same as me. The door tag is 6/72. Pretty sure it was the last one off the lot here back in the day... so ended up registered as a 73.

I am putting together a shopping list of little things I need... I will start with Jim's garage here in town...
Thanks again!
