Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Total surprise that a decent alignment made the car go straight down the road, I mean, lane.... Who would have thought that? ')
Inspection this Tuesday, then assuming it passes, I'll finally get to drive this thing.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Maybe someone here knows. I "redid" the drivers seat position this week. It was a tad high and wouldn't go back far enough. What I did to fix that I'll describe later, but while I had the seat out, (2004 Acura RSX seats), I removed the side air bag module from the seat. I had previously shorted its trigger wiring to keep it safe, but I removed the entire module and fab'ed a nice aluminum plate to cover the gapping 9x4 hole in the side of the seat. Will do the same with the passenger side next.
The irrepressible child in me really really really wants to set this thing off but, I know better. I've handled and used some very nasty oil field charges in my past life, and I understand the risk and stupid factor in this,
Actually my real question is, how do I dispose of this thing safely? Can't find anything googling "air bag recycling" in Calgary. Anyone ever have to deal with this?

Bring it to an Acura dealer. I bet they would know what to do with it.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
You cannot just dispose of a "live" airbag. First you must set it off, yes this is the fun part! Inside the connector will be shorting bars (this shorts the connector when disconnected) usually you can just bend the tangs out of the way, then you need a power source I have used a 9 volt battery to set them off! You should mount it to a vise then make some long leads to get at least 15-20 ft away then connect the leads (I usually short out the leads that will connect to the battery then make connections to airbag). Be sure you are at a safe distance and connect to battery. That year will have 2 stage airbags (not sure if it will have both in a seat airbag though) (there will be 2 sets of connections). There are sone nasty chemicals (sodium azide) that the result of discharge so wear gloves to handle.Be safe and have fun!

I must clarify that it was .dave's car that was in the shop at the time of the previous fire extinquisher episode, and THAT was totally precautionary.....

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Big milestone day. The car passed it's out of province inspection and is now legally registered in Alberta.
Now I can finish up the few items that are left and get some miles on this thing!
Thanks to Les and the team at Bowness Motors/Rusty SpeedWerks for the professional handling of the inspection and your great attitude and service.

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
Day 2 report. Some issues to contend with.
The alternator, a new GM hot rod generic alt from Mopac, deciding to stop alternating and be just off instead. The main post came loose on the inside, so depending on mood and vibration, it would work/no work. Mopac replaced without question. 6 month warranty, just got it in under the wire.
Slight rubbing tire on left rear, need to "Adjust" the top fender lip some. The 205/50 15's on +12 panasports are just a tad too wide.
Really disappointing rear trans seal leak that's getting worse every minute. Could have sworn I put a new one in, will have to inspect the drive shaft surface and adjust/polish/speedySleeve/replace as needed. Can't have this pricey GM fancy anti-everything synthetic goo get waisted on the ground.
The gas gauge is going down way too fast. I put on 190 km and it's at 3/8 remaining. Couldn't be the way I'm driving it, can it? Naw must be leaking out somewhere, but not obvious....

Re: Restoring a '69 510 4 door.
My "normal" driving with the 2.3LZ gets me about 200-220km per tank. Straight hwy I can get almost 350. I do tend to use the throttle peddle like an on/off switch normally.
