Hello - Introduction

Post by bz8fs »

Hello Everyone,

I started building 510's in my driveway in around 1972. Yep, I'm an old fart.

I bought a 1971 2-door from a junk yard for $450 and rebuilt it. Needed a new front clip & suspension. From there I graduated to building cars for my sisters and then for my friends before moving on to helping build SCCA B sedan race versions.

I've had my '73 since 1975, it's got about 55,000 total miles on it. Tore it down to the tub & rebuilt it with all of the latest goodies circa 1976. L18, Arias forged pistons, dual dcoe 45 webers, Tilton suspension, 5-speed, flares, you name it.

It's now been about 5 years since I last started it, way to long. I have so many other projects that I'm having a difficult time deciding on what goes & what stays. I know 510's like the back of may hand, but my energy levels are nowhere near what they were.

Anyway here's a few views of how it looked when I started and some of today.

Is that the original 73 green? My very first 510 was the 'grabber green' colour, as far as I know it was a colour that started in 73, and I've seen it on 620's and 240z's.

Very cool, thanks for sharing and great to see a lifetime 510 guy - welcome to the Realm.

From another "old Fart", welcome to the site. There are very few true 1973's that are on this site. What is the serial number of your car?

I USED to hold the youngest 510 title and then was bumped by another that showed up in B.C. here. We will add your serial number to our list.

Hi Bryon,

Thank you! Yes, it's Nissan color #123 and is original. When I went to see the car when I was first considering it, it was parked next to a even brighter green Opel GT and I thought well it's pretty green but not too bad - but when I got it around some regular colored cars, it like "WoW, that's bright".

The green hornet has been in the family for over 4 generations!

Hi, & Thanks! It's PL510428626 and it is a true '73. The funky rubber blocks on the bumpers, lighted headlight & heater knobs, etc.

Hi, Yeah the flares - I did a number of them and the rears were always a pain. On this one I completely enclosed the inside with a new aluminum strip, weather sealed it and painted it inside & out so the inside of the trunk is totally sealed.
This was the first one that once I got started, stripped it down to the tub and built it back up until it was complete, I'd done enough of them that I knew all of the gottacha's and didn't get stuck. That's usually what happens, you hit some unexpected snag and that stalls the project while you try to figure out what's next - it just kills your momentum. So keep going, you'll get there!

Hi Bert, It's name is "The Green Hornet" named by one of my sisters in 1975! It's stuck ever since then.

One thing to really check, that does not get mentioned much here, is that a true 73' production had the horizontal crash bar in the doors...they weighed a ton. You can peer down the window track and see if you see them.

What is the production date on the door jamb tag (Drivers side)?

As I was racing mine, I switched out the doors when I built my car in 1978.

Hi Bert,

Mfg. date is 12/72, yeah it's got the heavy doors.

Thanks,

I see a few anomalys in this list, pauls car is made in 1972 and yenpit shows a lower serial number, yet shows it as 12 1972. Maybe we need to revisit the accuracy of some of the cars dates.

Funny...my car is titled as a 72. But, I was looking at the list thinking, wow...those vins are much higher than mine (266055). Sure enough, checked the manufacture date, which is 3/1971. Ughh...gotta get that corrected this summer.
