WTB: 720 FS5W71B external shifting components.

Post by abisel »

Looking for the external shifting components from a late model 720 FS5W71B 5-speed.

I have an '83 280ZX FS5W71B 5-speed, but the "striker guide" and "striker guide stop pin" are a bit worn. I would like to replace them with components from a 720 FS5W71B in order to give a shorter shift throw. I would also need the shifting lever with knob from a 720 at well. I am looking for the 720 components to not be as worn like mine (images below). Can anybody help?

The pin in the striking rod guide only allows the striking rod to rotate L&R through the neutral gate while preventing the rod from moving forward and back when shifting in and out of gears. Replacing either or both won't shorten the shift throw. If you have a lot of shifter play, replace the two side bushings and the plastic cup on the bottom of the shifter lever...

To shorten the length of the forward and back motion of the shifter, the hole for the shifter pin (fulcrum point) needs to be raised and the length of the shifter down from it increased the same amount.

This hole is higher but you need to increase the shifter length below the hole too. If you have this style striker guide you could even drill a hole even higher.

This looks the same as my 4 speed. Any idea where to get these bits?

What Mike is saying is correct. The photos I provided are showing the wear point on the striker guide and stopper pin that limit the side-to-side neutral shift gate movement and to keep the striker guide in position during forward and aft shifter movement. In my situation, the side-to-side movement is a bit excessive. I can rotate the stopper pin such that the worn spots are away from the striker guide, but the striker guide still has the worn area. I could try to place a spot weld in those areas and file them down to level them out. But... I am wanting to also shorten the forward/aft movement of the gear shift gate. And to get the shorter forward and aft movement, I need the fulcrum hole higher on the ears and the longer shifter as shown in Mikes pictures.

The stopper pin is NLA from Nissan and the 720 striker guide is also NLA. So I am looking for good used parts that are not worn like in my pictures.

Another area to help eliminate slop in the shifter mechanism are the two rollers inside the striker guide of which the striker rod moves forward and aft but does not limit side-to-side movement of the striker rod. The original rollers are narrow and held in place with an E-clip.

So, I removed the E-ring and rollers and took some measurements. The original rollers measured 4.95mm ID x 10.95mm OD x 3.39mm wide. I replaced them with miniature stainless steel sealed ball bearings used in the radio control cars. I used 5mm ID x 11mm OD x 5mm wide and they virtually eliminated any side-to-side or up-down movement of the striker rod, yet allowed the striker rod to move forward/aft just fine. No need for the E-ring either as the bearings filled the space completely.

Here are the ball bearings installed.

32855-H1010 for the two side bushings
32861-N4200 for the bottom cup.

If you have a 71B 4 or 5 speed or even the S10 dogleg, they are the same. Some later 71Bs used on the 720, S110 200sx, S12 used something different....

Three B's,
I'll try them again but then there is a different part number in that group, so maybe this time they will have one. Other times I tried, it came back NLA. I would still need a 720 shift lever to go with the striker guide.

I am still in need of the striker guide and striker stopper pin from a 720 or possibly a late year 620. The shift lever too.
