Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
Sucks that it only takes a certain size photo. I used to be able to upload larger ones, but, that changed when we last had site issues.
The forest fire smoke had come back so it was hard to get a nice contrast with the LIBERTY BELL peak. I did not even bother stopping at another photo op on the way back as it had gotten even hazier and would have looked washed out. It was also very cool up there, had us all shivering by the time we got back into the cars.

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
Yes it was harder to stay on your bumper this time. On that top speed burst up to 14mph I was in 3rd and flat on it before I saw the puff of white from your exhaust. That's the only reason I was on your bumper the whole time. I did miss my 4.44's. If anyone is interested there will be a R160 CLSD freshly rebuilt with 4.11's coming up for sale soon.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?

And yes a 50 shot of NOS would do wonders for DEAN's car.

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
I have to figure out how to eliminate that telltale puff...so I do not give it away when I get on it! That is when the secondary opens up and all hell breaks loose.

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
I have learned that if it looks like there is going to be an opportunity to pass I need to be in the right gear and ready. If I have to shift I have no chance. Even more so with the 4.11 gears. I can't just stand on it in 4th anymore.

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
Should try it with some 3.36's and down about 60hp to you. I felt like I was at Talladega running a restrictor plate. Great for cruising.....passing not so much.funwithmonkeys wrote:I have learned that if it looks like there is going to be an opportunity to pass I need to be in the right gear and ready. I can only imagine. 3.9 was bad enough. Robyn may have a R180 with 4.11's.

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
Even I get down into 4th if we are doing say 60 MPH, or sometimes top of 3rd if I want to be ballistic. 4th lets there be no lag with the turbo. I am lucky that I have the rev capability to go to 8,000 RPM.
I just saw the 3:3...must take a week to get to 70MPH

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
Yes what a great day! Not too bad that Johnathan and myself were not very far behind the 2 of you! My GPS fastest speed of the day was 168KPH on one ok maybe 2 of the straights! Seemed like the turns would never end. Great drive and as I write this the rain is falling... seems the system we had yesterday was being pushed by the incoming system today. Nice cool dense air perfect conditions for "goin for a rip" this is a DEFINITE do again, maybe next year my car will not be multi-colored. Hint hint...

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
This is a good group, everyone is on the "program", we flowed together well as a group.
EDIT : As I was sitting here tonight, mulling over how much fun that drive was, the history of our drives goes back some 26 years now, as a "510 group". People have come and gone, there are really only a handful of original drivers left now. We went though a time period where we had some real flakes, and dangerous ones come on some of our drives. One did a gas and dash, another rear ended another member going hot onto a bridge on the Duffy Lake, other making unsafe and/or illegal passes, which reflects on all of us. We STOPPED printing the drives in our newsletters and they became INVITATION only, to maintain the fun aspect + safety of our drives, which at no time were ever races.
At the height of our drives we would have a dozen 510's along but those days seem long gone, people busy with family, cars sold, etc.. I know for this year I promised myself I was going for drives even if by myself, which I did to Penticton this year. So I thank you new people for coming out now, as I still love the social aspect. I think our new Z person, Johnathan had a good time, as who knows what he thought a drive would be. He really got to put his car through it's paces, and his driving was right up there, so he fit right in.
We, as the collective group over the years, have put on thousands of high speed miles now, with nary an incident ( well, maybe Jason's spin on the Hope/Princeton, no damage other than pride).
That got me thinking back to my original roots, the Days of the Cannoballs to and from the Interior to races, where again, many, many trips were done at very high speed. Other than a few engines hatching over the time, no issues at all. Chickenman and I did have a bunch of rednecks in a pickup truck try to follow us from Falkland down to #1...they ended up in hay field! Lesson....trucks cannot match Solo cars in fast corners!!!
Chickenman can tell the tale of what happened when we got to #1 to Cache Creek.
One of the fellows was ferrying another persons car to the hillclimb one year, he and I in convoy. We went over a bridge at about 100 MPH and his car bottomed on the lip of the expansion joint, ripping the muffler (NEW) off, it rocketing off the road and down the embankment. We stopped and went back, he ran down and without thinking...HOW HOT IT WAS,,,grabbed it. OUCH. Later that night, like after midnight, the owner shows up at our motel and asked how the drive was......I was fiber glassing my airdam in the hotel room and we all cracked up as we just said it was fine. We had to stop at Midas and get a new muffler put on.
47 years of high speed drives and still enjoying the road trips.
Yes, we sure made the good call for the weather, raining hard here right now!

Re: WINTHROP Drive 2017
I just ground some numbers this AM, I did 679 km, or 421.9 miles, engine running time showed 8.3 hours. That is Richmond to Richmond for me.
I tagged 183KMH at one point. It looks like I may still have 2 gallons of fuel left, which is just plain crazy.
We never did use my infrared temp to check some diffs etc...next time..this sure would have been a good one to do that on considering the speed and load on those hills.
I now have driven 2,021 miles for the season, so I met my goal, maybe one more small drive yet.
I wonder if the pass got snow? We did get snow on our mountain tops inland, Whistler and Blackcomb
