Intro - and a 510 build thread

Post by inline6 »

Hi,

After many years of 510 inactivity, I may be getting back into my project 510 which I acquired in October of 1994 for $2000). The car was manufactured in 9/69, and it has been off the road since about 1979. The previous owner started to make it into a race car, but never finished. It came with a JDM L18 engine (w/A87 head) which I still have, and a brand new Nissan comp. middle close ratio roadster gearbox, bolted up with a 240z bell housing. I sold the trans to a roadster guy many years ago for $1200 and sold a few other parts I didn't need over the years, like an uncracked dash pad and the under dash air conditioning unit. So, I this car has turned out to be quite a deal!

When going through it at time of acquisition, I recall finding an oil change slip sticker that call for the next oil change at 68,000 miles. Here are some pics as it sits today:

There are a few pin holes in the driver floor, but the car is solid everywhere. The bare metal you see has been that way since I last worked on it in 1995. At that time, I modded the front floors/wheel wells for increased tire clearance, made and tacked metal panels between the rear outer quarter panels and wheel arches, and did some stitch welding on the engine compartment.

I'm leaning toward making a decent replica #46 BRE car. Like that car, mine is a 70. For the engine, I'm thinking of going with an LZ22, bored and stroked to a 2.3 with 6" rods. I have a U67 head from a L-20B which was built by Tom Howen (Malvern Racing). I ran a similar it in a similar engine in a 510 back in college. I've still got the 92 mm crankshaft.

I have a 82-83 280ZX tranny for the car, and a 4.11 Subaru R-160 diff which I think is an LSD - can't remember. I will go coil overs all around, and 4 wheel disc brakes, but small enough to fit behind 13 X 7 Libres.

I've owned 4 510's now. I got a 4-door when I was 15 and ended up totaling it my first month in college at 18. I bought a rusty 2 door to replace it, but it turned out to have a full front clip (front of one car welded to rear of another). I set that one aside and bought a 73 two door which lasted the rest of college. That car had the 2.3 liter. It also had a factory tach, factory rear defrost, and a Canadian model heater core. I still have all of those parts. Unfortunately, I totaled that one at the end of college!

I've got LOTS of spare 510 hardware and some parts from the 71 four door and the 73 two door. I'll probably be putting some of them in the classified section.

Anyway, that is my intro. I hope to stay on track and make good progress, but this build will probably take a few years!

Hey Garrett, welcome to the forum, looks like a real solid shell to start with.

Sounds like you need to bring the suspension up to your level of ambition!

Well have fun.

Rad project! I look forward to the build.

I spy a set of the Nissan comp TC rod kit installed backwards.

DOH!! I was going to mention that also. All in all it sure looks like a solid project. Sure hope you don't wreck it after completion

LOL - nothing currently installed is staying there - it is coming back off again. That was put there for the tow on a dolly from VA to GA in 2012.

Still forming plans for the suspension. I've noted the full coil-over setup that is on Troy Ermish's site. https://ermish-racing.com/coil-over-kits, and the offerings at http://www.dpracing.co/. And I've been looking at all of what is available at http://www.datsport.com/. I like the rear control arm hardware they sell a lot. And their full front end kit for all engine swaps looks interesting. It claims to entirely fix all handling/bump steer issues with lowering the car. Got more research to do.

The car came with an "Mulholland/Interpart" suspension set up (unused springs, inserts, shocks, and fr. and rr. anti-sway bars with hardware) - all new, which is what... about 38 years old now!!

Here are pics of the Interpart stuff. Strut inserts and front springs are assembled on struts on the car. Rear shocks and springs were installed on the car went it went into long term storage, so they have a bit of rust. Anti-sway bars were not installed. Shocks are BOGE - not Koni as I have seen mentioned in an ad from the 70's.
