Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
i "thought" from memory that i used to use BZ3099 or Hz3099 seems all tokiko are virtually obsolete at this time.
are Kyb decent enough ? i have strut tubes at about 13.5" so the 14" ones are too long unless i redo the tubes-
i dont think bilstein makes any inserts only anymore that will work-the MR2 stuff i found states full housing so not an insert.
do they? is there a wabbit or fox insert that bilstein makes?
not really wanting race koni inserts - last time i did short struts tokikos were readily available- not so it seems now-
anything better than kyb that is available ? 92 mr2 fronts are 13.2 " long - can also use rabbit - rabbit was what was the most common but i believe we switched to the mr2 ones as they were stronger valving than the VW ones were.
koni race 8610 - 1437 are $230 usd ea
kyb agx are $100 and the regular kyb are $50 .. all usd .. havent found any other options- not considering gabriel or monroe

Re: Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
I used the regular KYB and the Koni sport ones. Below 200lb springs the regular kyb worked well enough. The Koni sport worked well with 200lb and with 300lb springs. I have the koni race ones currently.
If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Re: Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
I have the Tokico 5 way adjustable units. Junk, at the track 1-5 feels exactly the same.

Re: Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
thats funny as when we used to use tokikos they almost always ended up on 3... have you taken one out to see if its blown now ? i was pretty sure that on 5 they used to be stiffer
faaaack maybe i should put the koni race inserts in then...
is 200lb plenty for occasional track day to beat the car into submission?

I have Tokico 5 way adjustable from a gen 1 MR2 in the Bronze, still working well after 10 years of service... I'd have to look back in my build thread to find if I use front or rear inserts, Memory tells me there was only 10mm difference in length, but both require the 280ZX strut housing to be shortened. In my case I used A510 struts and 280zx hubs.

I would agree they work, just not well. I'm going to swap in the Billstein's for a rabbit and see how they do for now. I want to get a set of 2 way adjustable Fortune Auto coilovers. I've heard good things from some autox buddies down south. They better be for the cost!Byron510 wrote: ↑09 Jan 2019 16:43I have Tokico 5 way adjustable from a gen 1 MR2 in the Bronze, still working well after 10 years of service... never heard of fortune coilovers..
is there a bilstein for a wabbit>? i couldnt find that part showing an insert and not a whole housing.
if there was i would consider bilsteins all around as the rear would be easy to do coilover on.
anyone tried the JRZ inserts that TSR has?

Fortune Auto doesn't make them for the 510, they are similar to JRZ's so you can get them valved to your specs. The way that Fortune Auto's work they can be dialed down for daily driving and not loose any performance. One day I will get a set.

how are you going to get a set if they dont make them? wouldnt seem like it worth it for them to make a single one off pair ?

I've converted S13 coilovers onto 510's a bunch of times. Super easy.

If you are going to track the car or even drive with some gusto on the winding back roads you will bottom out the suspension with 200lb springs. Mine did just driving down Broadway when I hit a bump at a bus stop.

If you get S13 coils, make sure you get steel lower sleeves so you can weld them onto the struts.

Norm.
Race tracks dont have bumps I'm not sure even 250lb wont fix that issue of a sudden pothole.. Maybe your dampers are losing pressure? But I'm guessing it's more of an issue of a short strut with only 3 inches ? of travel at ride height. and the sudden drop the damper isn't stiff/fast enough to support that spring before it bottoms out at that travel. not really anything wrong except that you have to be on the lookout for potholes. maybe a $4k jrz set will fix that , last year i was driving a F430 and i was suprised how well it handled sudden "road imperfections" far better than my 240z does.. but then i hope a car that cost $300k or whatever new is a bit better than my 45 year old datsun..
But are you saying s13 front strut tubes fit in a 280zx housing? They dont look at all like that is possible..,,,
ok now ive read that thread on the s13 strut mod..
first im not a chinese part fan- if i can avoid them i will - id rather use kyb than some cheapo coilovers- but thats me.
while that conversion works its not for me- i dont want an interference fit on my strut - im also not sold on any of the offshore coilovers being all that great- and if im going to spend the doh some day on high end stuff it will be jrz or penske..etc
weird i just found bilstein inserts for a vw - the original part P30-0137 showed discontinued and no replacement and today i found this
34-001370 $140 usd each
if there is a steel section that can be welded that may make me more confortable with that. still would need to know what the strut length is and how much travel is there to know if thats an improvement over running vw or mr2 inserts and doing it the old fashioned way . which has worked for decades on cars that have raced..

Re: Front short strut inserts whats available in 2019?
I'm using MR2 AW11 Rear Koni Sport inserts in shortened 280ZX struts with 225# springs. Bought the Konis in spring 2017, but should still be available.
Length comparison:
280ZX Tokico Illumina BZ3038 (14 7/8")
MR2 Koni 8641-1142SP (13 5/8")
The threaded end of the piston rod is larger OD than the Tokicos, so you might have to have the retaining nut/sleeve adapter thingees turned down to fit depending on which camber plates you're running. I had to do that to fit Cuscos.
