280ZX Turbo or Equivilent High Volume Pump Part Number

Post by Byron510 »

Hi All,

I'm in parts collection mode, I have a couple of motors to build, and need some past experience from some of you that still play with L motors - yes Jeff, I know :-)

I need to verify what's left out there these days. Is there a comparable high volume oil pump available that's actually matching the 280ZX Turbo Automatic pump we used to all use? I have read a number of you have used a KA SOHC pump, stating it was the same. In fact this is what's in my current motor. But I didn't actually disassemble it to verify if it actually has the longer gears that make it a high volume pump.

Are there comparable part numbers out there that are available? Starting with the OE pump, and then moving on to
Melling - M111 or M152
ITM - 0571057
Sealed Power - 22441920 or 22443451
Hitachi - OUP0016
SKP - SKOM152 (Never heard of this one before, but judging by the PN, is it a re-boxed Melling?)

When I search the non-turbo applications, the Hitachi and SKP come up the same PN.

Can anyone verify if any of the PN's above are actually high volume pumps, and what are your experiences with quality?

Thanks - Byron

Only the KA24E in the 240sx had it and both KA24E and DE had them in the D21 Hardbody trucks.

'89-'90 240sx and '90-'97 D21 Hardbody KA24E hi volume pump....... 15010-40F00. '98- KA24DE Hardbody pump.... 15010-3S500. The number difference for the same pump is likely a slightly different release pressure spring. You can always shim it. AS the oil bleeding past all the bearings in an engine remains relatively the same no matter the RPM, a high volume pump builds pressure faster at lower RPMs than a regular pump. Hot idle and low speed pressures are markedly higher although the max pressures are the same at 50-60 PSI. All KA24DE engines uses oil squirters to cool the piston undersides so this would eat up oil volume. My 17 PSI hot idle oil pressure L20B jumped to 29 PSI with an old and well used '90 240sx pump I pulled at the wrecking yard.

You can't tell from the outside when mounted, they look like ordinary L series pumps. If you pull one from an engine or buy one in a box be sure what to look for to tell the difference. The hi volume pump rotors are 13% longer...

Hi volume oil pump. Look down into larger center hole You can see the top and rounded side of the trochoid rotor.

Ordinary pumps the rotor is down inside and just the top is visible...

That's excellent Mike - thanks for the confirmation and the exact applications.

Advise needed from the Realm; If I were to purchase an aftermarket pump - does anyone have experience with the manufactures listed?

ITM
Sealed Power
Hitachi
SKP

Are there other brands that are more desirable?

Thanks for your input.

Sorry Byron I guess that didn't really answer your original question. Just how to know one when you see it. All the oil pumps have that Hitachi symbol on them.

I just grab used ones, after all they don't have much wear on them being an oil pump.

I'm sure you guys are aware, but, I will mention it in case others are not..that you can shim the pump to put out more oil pressure.

As I have a large flow of oil, the spray bar AND the turbo feed, that contributed to an oil pressure drop. With a small, washer thin shim, it brought my gauge observed pressure back up.

It is a bit of "try and see" as to thickness, but, it does not take very much to increase the spring tension in the pump.

Someone sells an externally adjustable oil pressure adjuster thingy that screws into the relief valve port. Just a threaded post that pushes on the spring more or less to adjust the bypass pressure. Can't for the life of me remember who sells it, but I have kicking around here somewhere that I've never used. Usual story.... Being using the M152 on all my L engines for several years now.

Thanks Rob, I'm going to look into that after I talk to Andy, see what his take is.

The X-trail SR20DET keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. Stock HP is 280...... for 1600 bucks.... Yes It's FWD but Sam put one in his wagon. Although it does require a bunch of work. Maybe about as much work as a turbo L series. :)
