Changing my cars attitude
As half of the driving here in Vermont is on dirt roads and my front sump FJ20''s pan sits about 3" off the ground, I am thinking about raising the car up and a tire change. Can someone suggest an all terrain on/off road tire that would mate well with 14" x 6" Libras? I would think I could get away with a 185/70/14 or close to that.

Going through Tire Rack for a while I found only 1x 14" tire - the General Grabbers - at 8.5x27" - still a big tire.

The next step up that readily available in off road tires is the 215/75 15 - which is also a big tire.
But there are options, at a 185/65-14 - as the Yoko A048 is to pavement, this types of tire is to gravel;

But at $200 each - thats an expensive play tire, but it's a race gravel tire that won't prove you wrong. You'll have fun for sure.

the 8.50 r14 general is a big tire (for a 510)and a 6in rim is a little narrow. with stock bump stops and some tubbing with a flair the tire still makes contact. now the tire is fun! the compound is hard making it lively on wet pavement and with a 6in rim you will learn a lot about side wall flex. if you pick up a nail it wont matter as the tire will support the car without air. after two years the tire looks new with all its little nubs.

Thanks for the pic Robyn, good to see some real world experience with it. I saw it on tirerack but didn't know how the sizing would equate and it looks like it is way too big for rolled fenders and 6" wheels.
I like that Maxxis Byron....of course it is the most expensive option, but it seems like it is the only one that will fit properly too.
Love to look of your car there, looks just like my track car (that I sold for $8K and then was parked and resold four years later on BAT for $16K!).

This is considered a winter tire, but for $80/per the tread pattern looks pretty good for all around beating in 185/65/14:

A lot of those gravel specific tires (tyres) for around 100-120 each is a bargain. We pay double that here and wait inordinate amounts of time.
One draw back to the heavily siped tire is that the tread blocks don’t have a lot of support, and generally the snow tires are a softer compound of rubber - you may end up just shredding these if you put any power through them. Food for thought.

Thing about these rally tires is that theres a lot more sizes to pick from and you can even pick a compound! That’s still a snow tire - lots of sipes, no good for gravel. They’d just shred in no time driven and any reasonable speed, especially sideways.
This is where a purely gravel tire shines, and outside of rally tire makes, these are non existent in 14” any more unfortunately.

I haven't committed yet, but once I sell off a few bits the full paint/body restoration will be under way....a call to Demon Tweeks will be made.
