Howdy,
I'm new here still, and also new to working on such awesome cars as our beloved 510's (i.e. this is the first time I've ever worked on a carburetor!). I was able to (successfully?) rebuild the Weber 32 36 carb on my 510. It still needs adjusting (idle, choke, lean mixture screw, etc) but I am having a hard time identifying what the red wire that plugs into the side - I didn't get any pictures of what the thing looks like on it's own, but it looks like it has some kind of fuel or air jet (like the other brass colored bits) in it.
I have attached a pic of the (dirty, help needed, etc) engine bay... the red wire is pretty easy to see.
If it helps, the engine is an L18 (per the previous owner). If there's anything else that screams "DEAL WITH ME NOW", please let me know... as I said above, I have a lot to learn (including what to address) and I am embracing my lack of knowledge in order to conquer it.

Does that red wire run over to the coil resistor as it appears to from what I can see? My guess is it is some kind of fuel cutoff solenoid (anti-dieseling) of some sort. I have never had a 32/36 with that feature, but perhaps they are available that way.

That looks like it could be it... looking at a parts diagram there's something that looks like it labeled Idle Cut-Off Solenoid. Thanks! I don't think I would have found this on my own!

I would strongly suggest, if you have not already...TOTALLY bleed through those brakes, that fluid is done. Bleed to the point that clear, fresh fluid is coming out.
Start with the right rear first till its clear, then move to the left rear. For the front, start with the right front till it is clear, then move to the left side.
Bleed the clutch also till clear.
If you think the bleeders may be frozen....get some DEEP CREEP to hopefully free them up, let that soak in for a day or so.

I know that this thread started out about a carb. But now that we are talking about brake fluid, I agree that the fluid color in the reservoir looks almost black from the picture, and it is a good suggestion that Keith has made here. I have a syringe that I picked up from a paint store, and I use this to extract all of the spent fluid in the reservoir. I then get in there carefully with paper towel to clean out the residue. Then top up with fresh fluid. That way you aren't mixing new fluid in with the spent fluid. As soon as you see clear fluid at each wheel cylinder the entire system now has fresh fluid.

For sure that's on my to do list... along with changing the spark plugs, changing the oil, replacing suspension bushings, wheel bearing(s?), etc.

The red wire looks like it is the power wire for the electric choke on the carb. It should be hooked up to switched power......only comes ON when you start the car. Inside that choke mechanism is a coiled heat sink spring, so the choke is ON at initial cold start up. After you start the car, the power wire slowly heats up the coiled spring, as it heats up it pulls the choke OFF. Electric chokes work well, although alot of people prefer a MANUAL choke. Hope that helps!

Did you give those "Booster" venturis a wiggle? They tend to loosen up over time and can give a bad signal if they leak air.
Also important that you got the right top gasket in place, did you put a new one in?

One was loose, one was good. I did put a new gasket on. The old one was way tired.

ok... I suck at this. The gaskets (there were two... odd) from the official Redline Weber box were both the wrong new style. After rebuilding, it seems to run on three cylinders until it's warm, unless I lean the engine way out (the idle screw is almost all the way in, not the ~2 full turns out). I've adjusted it a bit more, and it seems to do mostly fine once warm, except there's hesitation on acceleration, like it misses or something.
I should probably see if there are any vacuum leaks too...and the smog pump thing?

make sure...look down the primary carb throat...that when you blip the gas....fuel comes out the accelerator pump jet.
If so...the idle jet needs changing...as the engine goes lean for a minute in the transition from the idle circuit to main circuit start up.
A "BOG" is a classic carb thing if too lean when opening the throttle.
Spray a bit of brake clean when engine running around both the base of the carb, and, the primary throttle shaft and see if engine note changes.
That carb looks like it has some miles on it. Give the throttle a wiggle to see if worn.
Why those clowns can't get the right gasket is just stupid.
I think I have extra top gaskets and can mail you down one if you cannot get the right one. I had a bunch made up for mine and OVERSEAS AUTO here in Vancouver has the right ones also.

I've looked - fuel most certainly does come out on throttle blip. The throttle linkage is pretty worn, for sure. I'm resisting the urge to go full dual DCOE 40 style... talk me out of it?
