Thanks for the advice. I sprayed an old door to see the color. On top of the grey. On a spot with sand thru, 3 coats didn't hide it. So I will be using sealer. And it's good practice anyway. But I was leaning towards black. Now I'm not sure. Lol. So maybe a few spray outs are in order.

Yeah, try the white primer. Show us some pictures of the red over the grey and the red over the white.

Re. windshields (if that's still of interest...) :?

I ordered a new one a couple of months ago from Crystal Glass here in Edmonton. No it wasn't Pilkington, but the price was pretty good and frankly I was just glad they could get me one. Not sure if you have Crystal Glass on the Island, Mike, but if you do, you might give them a try.

Cheers;

I just did receive a couple 510 windshields from Pilkington. Blue tint. They were ordered from Pilkington website via the classics email address Classics@pilkington.com Made in England and delivered to a local Pilkington shop. Total cost for 2 windshields was 722.33 USD. It took a while but they did deliver. They came in cardboard boxes with spacers and foam padding. One box fit inside the 4Runner, the other was too long and had to be unpacked.

So... Contact Pilkington via their classics email address, tell them you want a windshield for your 69-73 510 and they will help you out.

Long Story...
Pilkington Windshields are now available at Summit.

I was one of the unfortunates that bought and paid for a Blue Tint Windshield from Summit back in July 2018.
Part # PKC-400046687 for $202.99 plus $50.00 special shipping = $252.99
They have been back ordered ever since.

Come to find out...the Part number was later changed to PKC-400003132.
However, the Summit application database erroneously shows only for 1968-1970 Datsun 510.
So....those that have 71-73 cars will be stuck in forever back order, even if they do eventually covert over to the new part number.

I called Summit about this early this month (November 2019), they checked with Pilkington to confirm that the new part number fits my 1972 Wagon (of course...the windshields from 1968-1973 are all the same, 2 door, 4 door, wagon), but their database remains unchanged.
Also unfortunately, the windshields (with the new part numbers were still back ordered).

Today, when looking at Summit's website and searching for the new number "PKC-400003132" it shows for sale at $399.99 and ships tomorrow.

Shorter Story...
I called them, and they are expediting shipment of my windshield to me. Should be early next week with the holiday.
(Same price of course as previously paid).

Bottom line, If you have been patiently waiting like I have, Get in touch with Summit right now, before they go into 2 year back order again...
Regards,
John

MikeY: Maybe if you ordered direct from Pilkington the cost would be less? Give it a try. Send your request to Classics@pilkington.com and see what happens.

A quick update- I called Pilkington Classics directly, and was able to get two windshields shipped to the Pilkington warehouse closest to me (Long Island NY) for $450.
Got a call yesterday that they’re ready to be picked up.
Definitely a MUCH better deal than buying from Summit.
I’ll post some pics when I pick them up.
Cheers, Happy Holidays,

Angus

Called Pilkington and talked to Randy. He has 18 windshields that just came in. They waited over a year for. They are the light blue with no shade band.
$395 USD plus 150 shipping or 250 shipping (for 2 in a crate) to my Sumas WA address.
I am thinking of ordering 2. Any one else in Vancouver BC or beyond want to get one?
If all else fails... try again

Went out to Pilkington in Long Island today and picked the windshields up.
Right off the bat, the light blue tint is really dense. Not sure how I feel about it yet.
They're good quality, made in Finland, 6mm thick measured in the middle at the top.
I took a very unscientific reading of the density of the blue tint. Measured on my incident light meter, the glass eats up half a stop of light - that's 50%. Makes me like the blue tint even less...

What do you think once you got it installed? All of my glass is original (light blue tint) except for the front windshield and wondering if I want to replace it with one of these.

Thanks.

I had emailed them, but no reply. I had just purchased a front window from my local glass shop before I moved, but its a green tint and doesn't match the rest of the blue tint glass unfortunately. I'll have to get one of these eventually.

When I contacted Pilkington about a front windscreen for my 72 four door, they said "we don't have a classics division any more" and to contact a dealer. Basically they still make the glass but don't want to deal with the public directly. I contacted Fesler Auto Glass (Tyler@feslerusa.com) and he arranged for a windshield to be shipped to a Pilkington distributor/warehouse near me (closest one is in Portland, OR). Since it is being shipped to a warehouse, I did not pay for 'shipping' but rather a $75 boxing fee. The glass was $325 so the total came to $400 and I should see it in about 3 weeks. This was a better deal than Summit and I only need to drive about 30 minutes to pick it up.
