TA 71B #2 Tranny

Post by deano510 »

I have a couple of the above, and I'm looking for rebuild kits for them. One of them jumps out of 5th gear when not under power or compression.
The other one needs the synchros replaced.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I bought one from Transmission Exchange in Portland 3 or 4 years ago. http://txchange.com/

It was a kit with bearings, seals, and syncros.

I just looked at their web site, and applications didn’t go further back than 1990. Did you call in your order?
It’d be good to know that parts are still a available.

Don't know if this site has what your looking for. I've been meaning to pick up this kit for my zx 5 sp. Any input on weather it's Corri would be helpful.

I've used Nachi bearings they're ok and from Japan. I don't know why these kits say 71C as they were first used in the 300zx non turbo in '84 and then not until '86.5 in the S12 and D21 Hardbody. The 56mm counter bearing won't fit them.

We buy the rebuild kits from cobratransmission.com. All of their Nissan (not listed under Datsun) 5speed kits are ultimately the same, for that series trans that was used in the 1977 280Z thru the 1983 280ZX. The kits have qty 5 brass synchro rings, but the earlier 1977-1980'ish 5speed with the .864 5th ratio (double ears at rear of tail housing) uses a phenolic (??) 5th synchro that is long NLA NLS. This synchro is abidextrous & can be FLIPPED to the other side that is not normally used! The kits also do NOT have a small lip seal & oring for the upper shift shaft. Under heavy use ie racing, those upper seals can leak & splatter trans fluid out of the shift lever hole! Riley at Lynchburg Nissan 800-443-2117 has these seals. Hope that helps!

I got a kit.

Now, does anyone know of a YT video that will coach me through this rebuild?

I’ve bought what turned out to be the IDENTICAL kit from transmissionpartsdistributors.com, Drivetrain.com and from rockauto. Look for the BK104WS part number. The rockauto part began with ZM. All had identical contents (Nachi bearings). Rockauto was much cheaper than the others Including the shipping. ($88.28CAD today)

All the pictures I took doing transmission rebuilds this year, and not one of the kit box contents...

6 Nachi roller bearings, 1 little roller sleeve pin bearing (front end of main shaft), 5 synchros, front and rear oil seals, front cover gasket. That’s it.

I was able to get the other sleeve bearings from Nissan.

No wait! I found one.

Watched the video to about the 50 minute mark where he was installing the counter shaft with a ball peen hammer! I had to stop it there as that is a total no-no. (remember these are hardened) they will chip and or mushroom etc. best way is to use a dead blow hammer and while the center plate is mounted as shown (in a vise) pull on the counter shaft and hit the plate as you pull on the shaft (it will move surprisingly easily) with this method and no potential damage to shaft/making it hard to install the front bearing! Be sure no to go to far as you need the rest of the gear cluster on the main shaft before the counter shaft gets fully seated.

Good luck on the rebuild.

I used the mainshaft nut and the counter gear nut to pull in both shafts easy. Counter gear 4th gear was removed to make it much easier then later pressed back on with the input shaft. But you don't have to remove the counter shafts 4th gear to do this but it does make it easier. All this pulls against the bearing center section protecting against unwanted force on the bearings.
