Autocross Nerd

Post by ejmatthai »

My longtime friend has a 2 door 510 that he's had since high school. I'm helping him prep the car for an autocross season next year.

I have a 1979 Subaru GL wagon that's been converted to RWD and put down 170HP to the tire with the help of a lightly modified EJ22 from a mid-90s Subaru. It gets confused for a 510 a lot, so I might as well see what other parts/mods I can make work to make it more Datsun-like. There's basically no performance / aftermarket for the 70s Subaru cars, but Nissan helped Subaru a lot back in the day.

While I'm here, hopefully I'll find some mods or inspiration to improve endurance and performance of my friend's 510, and maybe something to adapt to the old Subaru platform so I can keep up with the 510!

Couple photos of the 79 Subaru at it's 2nd Autocross weekend this October.
Day 1 with the stock front struts:

Day 2: Worked overnight to swap in used 2WD front struts and align the car, which was good for getting about 10 seconds faster on a ~80 second course
Next day of the event, stock 2WD front struts, still no sway bars
