Mission Raceway - Sept. 2-4, 2005
Hey all,
Just a heads up. Garry Koehn will be competing this weekend at Mission in his KA24E-powered GT-prepared 510 in the SPM class.
He will be testing tomorrow (Friday), and should be at the track after 10am.
Also testing tomorrow, may be Andy Pearson and his SCCA GT Camaro. But he will not run on the weekend. Testing a motor only...

well, Andy was a no-show.
but we had fun! a small water leak in the lower rad hose to fix was all the excitemnt for the day. lots of track time too.
Garry managed to run off a few 1:17.x's on old tires and on his first day of the season. His personal best is a 1:16.8 at Mission.
The best part of the day was at tech when "some guy" asked Garry why he didn't have a SR20. The blank look Garry gave him was priceless. An extra 30hp off the bat instead of the 2.4L. Garry just said this was thie route he ended up going.
The guy and his car missed the practice day, and I guess missed Garry being only a couple seconds off the 3.6L twin turbo 911 running at 1.25 Bar.
I'll try to get some pictures tomorrow to share. My camera is/was dead.

Andy has had a repeated over heating issue on the Camero.
He has suspected a head gasket issue. After removing the heads last week, he found that there was a micro crack in the cylinder head, on #5.
At least he knows what the problem was now! The head
had to be welded up, and of course this took time.
Just got it back yesterday.

RACE REPORT:
Gary Koehn had mechanical trouble, very strangely
breaking the ears off the oil pump drive tangs that the distributor shaft goes into.
Tracey and Harry drove the Specialty Engineering prepared Turbo Mazda, in the 1 hour enduro, to a third place finish overall. Tracey actually led part of the race before we had to bring her in to change to intermediate rain tires and the manditory driver change. The track was very slippery due to changing weather that pretty much kept the track wet. We changed driver and tires and added fuel in 4 minutes. Look out NASCAR! Wow, were those wheel nuts hot. The Mazda ran perfectly, and actually gave some of the Sports Racers a hard time what with Tracey's very aggresive driving.

Keith, you were there? Glad to hear somebody made it out.
Yes, Gary broke his ZX Trubo oil pump, twice. Both on Sunday of course.
They ran for over an hour Friday with only rad issues. And on Saturday ended up pulling the rad and having to go to Chillwack to have it fixed (cracked hose neck, soldered joint) after a 15 min practice. The car was fixed and ready for the 15 min qualifying on Saturday and turned a 1:17.4 (or so). That was good for 4th fastest until Wouter Bouman showed up Sunday.
The oil pump broke during qualifying about 12mins into the session. Andy showed up with a new one, replaced it and the car was ready for the race.
Gary started 5th on the grid, and was in 4th by turn 1. When the new pump broke, it was ~20mins in to the 30 min race, and he was only second to the Porsche 911. Some of the others had fallan off with mechanical problems: Wouter (qual. 4th) pitted in his RX-7, and returned but laps down. The Rowse Monte Carlo (qualified 2nd) slowed and I believed pitted as well, a Merkur XR4Ti (started 3rd) with a Supra I6 Turbo motor must have had issues as he slowed, off the pace.
No matter what though, Gary had a great race! Jason said even after pushing him back into the pits, he had a huge grin on his face. and from working at turn 9 (front straight entrance) I can vouch for him doing very well.

Sorry I missed you Richard, I sat with Don in the bleachers
for awhile, then it was time to go to work.

Hey, I understand. I worked all weekend!
I'm just glad there was someone else showing some support.
How did Tracey feel after her stint? She was asking all us corner workers where the lines through such-n-such corner were. Made us worry, we all thought she knew what she was doing!
