280z for 280zx front brakes n stock drums in rear, or 280zx master for full 280zx brakes all around

Any Z car 70-78 master (7/8") is a good upgrade, the 280ZX master (15/16") or early 300ZX master (1") are used primarily for those racing as it reduces pedal travel, but increases pedal effort - not good if the wife needs to drive the car!

Wilwood has a direct 1" dual circuit bolt-in 240Z style with remote reservoirs (that can also be adapted to mount directly on the master). Looks like a Tokico built to their specs. About $120 US from Summitt Racing.

I have 280zx rear and front brakes, but I don't want to run the 280zx porportioning valve if possible. I don't want to run all the silly lines. I was thinking 200sx, the only issue is that the brakes on a 200sx are ever so slightly smaller, but I still am considering it. What about a maxima master? I believe those are same as a 280zx brakes, but I forgot if they use a seperate master cyl.

what year 280zx brake master cylinder matches the same bolt pattern as the 510 brake master cylinder. I have discs all around and want to upgrade, but Im not finding what year master cylinder off the 280zx is needed. Thanks.

'79-82 280ZX, should be a 15/16" M/C
‘70-78 Z will be 7/8" and the PL510 (‘69-73) was of course a 3/4".

I have been told the fist gen 300ZX will also bolt up, and it’s 1 1/16" - but this one is hear-say, don't hold me to it! :D

Well I did the 7/8th 280Z master cylinder upgrade, but now my rear brakes slowly lock after a few miles of driving. What did I do wrong?! I did use heat on the factory proportioning block to get the old lines off (the lines would not come off the old MC). I used the old arm from the 510 MC and put that into the 280Z MC.

My thoughts are:

I over heated the prop block and now its not releasing pressure from the rear?

The 510 MC arm is to long and not releasing pressure on the 280Z MC?

I can tell you that when the rear brakes lock up the pedal becomes firmer and firmer and I can release the rear brakes by opening the rear bleeder on the MC.

HELP ME OUT GUYS!

Colton, this could be a very simple issue - the rod connecting from the M/C back to the pedal may simply need to be adjusted back a pit. If the M/C piston cannot come rearward far enough to uncover the compensation port, the pressure never releases and just builds against the brakes. You may need to crack a bleeder in each circuit to release the pressure, then simply adjust the rod to also the M/C piston to return far enough to uncover this port in the M/C bore.

Byron,

If im reading your response right you are saying the rod is not letting the MC piston release all of the way. I do have slack in the pedal and the rod is not engaging the piston before I press on the brake pedal (I checked the clearances before bench bleeding the MC...maybe the Piston moved out after bleeding the MC???). Does anyone have any pics of the installation of the 510 rod in the 280Z MC? Maybe I should just order the rod that goes with the 280Z MC and stop screwing around? Thanks for the replies.
