Re: Noobie's 510 project
Sorry guys my question was not totally clear. If I am not buying the stubs then there would be no bolts being removed. You only need to remove the 8 nuts per side and remove the axles. At least on my car all the shoulder bolts are press fit in.
Dadzsun I don't want you to give any secrets. I was just wondering if I would be having to press them out.

If no one from the future comes back to stop you from doing it then how bad of a decision can it really be?
Re: Noobie's 510 project
Do the square flanges you weld on retain the round boss that keeps the axle concentric to the stub axles?

Datsun Restomods - CV
Absolutely! You can see it circled on the pic below along with a Suretrac R160 diff and new diff stubs (in silver). I tried to duplicate OEM wherever possible.
As FYI, the pictured prototype was only tested on clip-in Subie diff stubs so I didn't bother with a recess for the bolt head that sticks out when using Datsun diff/stubs. All productions CVs (and even Andrew's prototype) will default with a pocket.

Fritz, it would be great to meet up with you, and now we have extra good reason.
If you'd like to plan a get together - meet and greet in Vancouver, let us know a time and place.

R180 CV complete
Quick update on the CVs.
One R160 CV and stub set has already been sold to Fred_L-P, Datsun Restomods' first customer! Super great guy btw, he spent several hrs with Andrew and I last weekend.
For my trip out to Vancouver next week a couple of R160 versions (OEM length), and this shorter R180 example will be coming along. The R180 will hopefully be test fitted on a certain hot red turbo'd 510.
Key changes between the OEM length/diff and the shorter unit is the hub adapter is 10mm shorter which necessitates the (permanent) inclusion of shoulder bolts, and the upgrade to Redline CV2 grease. Unfortunately the extra parts and work adds cost, making these $680 USD.
Once the Vancouver trip is done I'm hoping to settle down and get the web site up and offer the final 8-10 sets up for sale before the holidays. Next batch won't be until later January - they take a LOT of friggin' time to build!!!
One more final CV iteration is in the works for a Realm member in the Northwest US, a 'short' CV with integrated STI stubs.

Re: Noobie's 510 project
I will be interested in the R180 version for sure. I don't think I will be able to make it into town to meet you when you are here. If they work out well on that red car I'm sure they would work on mine.

Let me know EXACTLY when you are coming, I will get Datsun jacked up if I can. At the moment there is room for me to work on the car as my son in laws trailer is down in California getting modded.

Re: Noobie's 510 project
Byron has been kind enough to offer his place for a get together and see a CV in person (will be installing it in a 510).
The plan is for Sunday Nov 25th, 1-5. http://www.the510realm.com/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=31253

Re: Noobie's 510 project
I'm not an engineer, but I think that you are going to want to make sure that your drive shaft flanges for your CV conversions are phased the same orientation -- it could cause you some vibration issues. Might be nothing to it, but I know that it can be an issue on U-joints. I realize that CV's will be different, but I would still think that it is a good practice.
Other than that-- nice work finding a solution to your CV axle issue!

Re: Noobie's 510 project
Thanks for the feedback Michael - it's been something I've considered at length during the design phase.
With a CV (constant velocity/rotational speed) it wouldn't matter the orientation of the flange because it's now only a means to fasten - no different the random angle that a male spline on a modern CV axle is inserted into a female diff/hub.
Just to be sure we have sets with various orientations and all are dead smooth.
However, I'm all for removing doubt and will likely incorporate OEM flange orientation on future builds, if not for aesthetic reasons alone.
