Any one know what happened to this 510/smart car?

Post by orange510 » 19 Sep 2013 18:40

The driver was from Calgary and did not last the two nights to finish.

I happened to catch him going off due to sleet/freezing rain. Note the chopped body.

Wow, we haven't had yellow plates here since the early 80's. When was the photo taken, and at which rally?

The event was the 1980 Press on Regardless that took place out of Houghton, Michigan in early November. It was down to a two night rally from the original three nights.

At one time I had the drivers name but lost it. He ran a welding shop in Calgary.

The number of 510's was dropping at that point in time. The prime time was the early 70's Like the Mother's Motors Datsun driven by Colin Malkin.

Image

The navigator, Ralph Beckman told how Colin managed to break the gas tank on the first night of POR and the crew welded two 5 gal cans together and tied it down to continue. The Colin managed to break that. When gas started flowing into the passenger compartment, Ralph bit adios! The car was repaired and rallied for a few years more, by Fred Olds of Grosse Pointe. MI

In another post you mention he owned a welding shop. Any other details about how you remember that?

The welding shop is stuck in my grey matter from a book of matches he handed me in lieu of a business card. I thought that seemed a bit strange at the time.

I've asked a local long time rally driver (Shawn Bishop) to see what he can find out. Until he gets back to me here is a pic of him in his 510 at the 1983 PFR:

I've got as cool video - mid 80's vintage - with Shawn Bishop and Tim Bendle in their 510's. The quality isn't that great, and it's on Beta! It was filmed on Vancouver Island, fun stuff. About 1/2 the field of 20 cars were 510's, 1/4 of them RX-3's and a few other cars - pretty weighted field, and the hay-days for 510 rally cars.

My good friend Mark Ward lives in the Calgary area, I know he talks to Shawn a few times a year still.

James - that photo you posted is awesome - that would be a cool solo II car! And for shits and giggles, I'd like to see the same treatment, only using a wagon rear end! Awesome.

Shawn says he has a betamax. ;)

He is recruiting some of the other local old time datsun guys to help with this mystery. He seems to think that this car was actually based out of Winnipeg.
Stay Tuned.

Shawn got his first reply back, this one is from Regina.
.. “Sorry Shawn, I don’t recognize it. The only shortened 510 I remember was Ron Shreyer’s out of the WSCC” It could be the one in the photo.
This was pretty much Shawn's first thought when I pointed him to this thread. He's been in the local rally scene since the mid 70's and the only shorty 510 he can recall is one out of Winnipeg.

I used to work for a guy in Calgary in 1982 , Murray Muncie. He owned Muncie motorsports. Had this crazy 2l 510 that he would Ralley all over the place. His co driver was then presedent of Mazda Canada. He used to chain smoke when he was driving ! LOL. Fearless . It was Blue 510, i have pics, but need to be scanned.
