Jeff's '70 2 Door

Post by slowerthantime »

I bought this car in September 2015 and have been using the Realm for information and inspiration ever since; thanks. So, here goes with by build thread. Going through this, it doesn't seem like I have much to show yet...soon.
I spent most of the early 1980's in Australia, thrashing around in the bush in 1600s. Back then we treated them as disposable....wreck one, get another one, swap a few parts and continue. I wish I could have a few of them back now. Since I made Canada my home in the mid 90s I have had 3 510's but until the last few years, I haven't had the time or space to take on a serious project. My skill set is limited to being handy (and trying to be patient), I have no formal technical skills or automotive training. I plan to learn along the way, so please send your constructive feedback.
The dream for this car is to be the car I wanted when I was a kid. Hopefully it will be a sturdy street legal play car that is at home on the track or on the local Okanagan back roads.

When I bought the car it was partially stripped out rolling shell and a few boxes of bits. The seller told me that the motor and transmission were stock. By happy accident, the motor turned out to be an L20B with V912 head. The transmission is a 5 speed with some mysterious ratios and the boxes of bits have some fun stuff like headers and 45 Webers on a manifold with linkages. This is great news for me as I plan to run L series. Otherwise, the car is reasonably complete, although none of the parts that were stripped prior to purchase were bagged/ labelled, so the nut and bolt part will be a pain.

I found the original warranty book and managed to connect with the nephew of the original owner, who was also the second owner. The car was sold in Victoria, so it seems to have spent its life in BC (which explains why I am still doing rust repair). The second owner sent me some pics and told me that Specialty did an L20B swap for him. I'm not sure if this is the same engine.

How it looked back in the day

I made a deal with myself that I wouldn't get sucked in to the fun stuff like building motors and suspension until I had a solid shell. For the most part, I have stuck to the plan. So far I have rebuilt the bottom of the firewall, new floors, new rockers, new wheel houses and trunk floor repair.. The rear quarters are off and almost ready to fit the new quarters and tail light panel.

The rockers had been patched over rotten metal and were completely shot.

After cutting everything in the middle of the car except the tunnel, I started to think about stiffness, integrity and safety. It had always been my plan to add a hoop to the car. The idea of a cage became more interesting and I gave it a ton of thought. I weighed the the issues of un-helmeted hazard and inconvenience against stiffness and crash protection and the full cage won. My design parameters for the cage: Keep the cage as tight to the shell as possible, maximize head room, keep the original dash, keep the heater and minimize the external view of the cage.

The cage design is based on SCCA spec. I think its close. I got a quote from a company in Kelowna at almost $5,000. At first the idea of building my own seemed too much. After looking into tools, pricing out steel and a fair bit of research I decided to go ahead. The tubing bender was the most expensive part. I also bought a basic tubing notcher.

Started with CAD design

Built the main hoop out of the car. My welds on the main hoop were ok but after tons of practice, I figured I would be ancient by the time I mastered out of position welding to my satisfaction. I decided to do all the fitting and tack up the cage and brought in my welder friend, Paul to lock it up. Since the front floors were out, it made sense to build the front of the cage first, then add door bars. After that, I installed the floors under the cage and brought Paul back in to weld in front base plates and the rear stays.
