PAINT and a Surprise from the shop!

Post by 72ultraorange »

Paint and Body shop has picked up steam and have started painting!!!

The rear gas spring trunk lifts worked perfectly — and the trunk floats with the spring force I selected - I will write a detailed post on this with all the parts and measurements if anyone is interested. If you are using the OE fuel tank and fill neck, this probably won’t work to have a gas spring on the passenger side; might work with 1 stronger spring on the left if you want to try it. My install has 2 springs.

Here are the updates:

Trunk - gas springs installed (will get better pictures/details on this soon)

AND a SURPRISE! One of the shop employees brought me this from a recent visit to his home in CALI - it was a great surprise! These will be great for my shop!

Nice progress! I also went with Lizard Skin for heat and sound protection. Was there anything special about the Raptor Liner that made you decide to go that route for the undercarriage? My painter asked if I had a preference when I dropped mine off yesterday - I didn't but said I would look into options.

THANKS! I have been trying to decide on the undercoating for some time; we talked about flat and satin coatings they had without textures and an undercoating option like Raptor Liner. I saw a 60’s classic Mustang they had done with Raptor Liner and it looked great. I have LINE-X in my F-150 bed and would say that the Raptor Liner is 1/2 as thick and doesn’t have as much texture — may just be their method of application. I am trying to go with processes they have experience doing at this shop. It looks like a durable undercoating. Will share some pictures on this once it gets applied.

I've been watching a YouTube show. Retro power. They do some pretty impressive work. They use raptor. So I've used it on my last job and liked it. Will be using it again. I just use a undercoating Shultz gun. I'm sure the texture could be manipulated with technic. I like how it mimics the under hood texture and is more durable than the solvent based factor undercoating.

Hey MikeY, thanks for sharing that input - that’s great validation on the Raptor decision. I am hoping they get this done in next few weeks and get the initial drive train assembly done at their shop and then back home! Great to see the progress now. Will post updated pictures late this week. Thank you!

Hey Chris, yes, the undercarriage and the inside of fenders have Raptor Liner and the interior of the cab has Lizard Skin. I will post pictures of the differences between the two surfaces when I get there for assembly soon. The Raptor liner is thinner than Line-X and the Lizard Skin helps with sound deadening and insulation. These are two of the primary processes this shop uses — so I rolled with it…. And agree the paint looks terrific in the pictures… Thank you!

Thanks Stu, I can’t wait to see it assembled … really hoping to make it back into a roller at their shop — complete drive train install and maybe get the door glass and door mechanisms reinstalled by a professional… have a long way to go to catch up with you! I want to get this on the track and out for some cruising as soon as possible… need to get my schedule worked out and hope for a mild winter to get it finished! Let’s get this done! I will need a lot of help getting this moving… will reach out!

I am going with Lizard Skin sound deadening and heat shield on my build... I am hoping it is better than the matt based products that you cut and roll on. The reviews seem pretty good and it does seem like the shops that start using it, really like the ease of installation and the performance. The videos on their website are impressive.

Assembly day - DONE!

Post by 72ultraorange »

Spent the day at the shop working to get the drive train in and a few remaining body trim items. Lesson learned — make sure you label all the parts and put them where you can find them. I had a few items I couldn’t find — and know they are in the garage or somewhere in the house. In either case, it was a great day of doing fun stuff! One big step forward…
