Winter ice storm got me

Post by bertvorgon »

Morning World,

So, 2 weeks before Christmas, with the warning of snow coming, I moved my G35 to the back of my house, under my HUGE cedar tree.. This was to both get it off the street, where they were salting and brining, which would splash up on my car and make the brakes on the drivers side seize up. The other issue is when it does snow, the White Rock snow plow driver is from hell...he goes up and down the street at 80 KMH, thus firing the road crap and rocks at the sides of vehicles like you would not believe.

As it was, the car got snowed in, in the back, so I could not move it.

On the night of Dec 22, when that ice storm hit, at 10 PM, in a blinding snow/ice rain, we heard a huge snap. My wife and I go running out back and sure enough, this massive limb has snapped and hit the hood of my G35...DAMN. It could have been so much worse if it had hit the windshield, the A-pillar, you name it. It took myself and a neighbor to get it off, it was so heavy.

Just filed my ICBC claim today, so that is on my list to have to get fixed. Nice way to start the New Year.

That sucks Keith. Like you said it could have been so much worse.

Ouch! Well I suppose at least it didn't hit a structural part of the car and cause a write-off.

It reminds me of a tree snapping and landing on Jason Wong's (ex-gooned) black wagon a number of years ago and flattening part of the roof etc...

How is Mr. Wong? Haven't seen him in 10 years at his place and before that well over 12 years ago when he came out to the island. His daughters must be grown up by now and he's bald from it.

Yeah that sucks Keith but also not so bad, still painful for ICBC factor.

I have not seen “my goon” since well before that incident, nor Jason.

Morning All,

I got my claim filed yesterday no problem, I have the pictures of course and my neighbor's as witness. I guess next step is to take it to a local body shop and see what it is going to take and when/how long. I'm in no rush, other than it is hard to look at..

Where it got hit was right where the rad support is, so it took the load, then the branch kinda skidded off. I have not opened the hood yet, to see if there is much reinforcing on the hood under that. That may determine how easy or not this repair will be. Makes me mad as there are so many shades of red on this car...what will the hood be!?

Jason has gone off the 510 map, as have a lot of others over the past years, just getting along with life. The days of 15 510's out for a drive are long gone, even with our later starts. I know it was hard for some to get up at 4 Am to be early in Hope, which was necessary to have clear roads, at least for half the trip. Back then we did live the Golden Age of some pretty serious canyon carving. After my run with Jamie I gave myself a slap and need to tone that down again.

Anybody mind if I throw up some of my work career stories? I wrote them basically for myself and family, while the events were still fresh in my mind. They will be a small insight to the insanity of the precious metals refining industry in B.C., which supported me for 48 years through some crazy stuff.

Sun is out today so I am putting fresh fuel in my chain saw and go and cut up that branch. Sounds like a good windstorm is coming AGAIN, so I am making sure I am NOT under any trees....!!!

Yeah I try to pop in here often but not much 510 content in my life these days, other than the cars sitting here.

Occasionally I think of getting a Goon again, but too many projects as it is, I missed my target of racing again before 50 too 😕

I’d be very interested in reading anything you have written over the years Keith, and I know I’m not alone…post up on your Rolling Dyno thread or start a new one?

Keith, You write well, I've always enjoyed it.

Jason - Racing again before 50. It's wasn't a spefcific goal for me, but thankfully this year I did get back on the track aftermany years away. I need to do a write up.
I haven't written here for a while, I need to make it part of the routine again. I do miss it.

YEEEEHAAAAA...I finally got the G35 fixed. It took then some time to find a hood and when they could not find a good one from the wreckers, tracked down a factory one out of the states, 900.00 BUCKS.

Craftsman Collision did an impeccable job for me. They loved how clean the car is and offered if I come back soon, to tidy up the rear wing where the clear finish is coming off for dirt cheap $. Colour match now good also, matching the fenders, etc.

Now onto the 510!!!!!!

Glad you got a good repair Keith, not always a happy ending at the body shops…

I missed all of this while I was locked out of the Realm... Sorry to hear about the damage Keith - better that it was the Infinity than the 510 though!

Hope all is well.

Things good! I got my tow hook from Jamie a week or so ago,
just making sure 510 is ready to go to Andy's in April/May? sometime.

Will have to push car out of garage so it can get pulled up onto a flat deck. I needed a hook as I have way too much stuff for a hook to go under the car to grab the cross member.

Andy ordered my new pistons about a week ago with a 7-8 week delivery time.

Problem at the moment is finding the 2 bolts that would hold the bumper (hook) on, as they have a very fine 1.25 thread pitch. I might just be heading out to Fuller metric today.
