Re: 280 5 speed swap in a 510

Talk to the drive line specialist to find out what he needs to know in order to build it.

Re: 280 5 speed swap in a 510

I wrote this down years ago. Stock sedan 42.9/16" shortened for zx 5 speed 37 3/8" or 5.2775" different.

I've measured the stock 4 speeds at 26" and the zx 5 speeds are 31.5, so 5.5" difference.

Make of this what you will.

Re: speedo cable

Un-clip and pull the 510 cable up into the engine compartment. Now feed it down behind the head and diagonally over the top of the 5 speed to the right rear. It will fit. I had the same 26" 4 speed with the speedometer pinion on the driver's side in my 710. I put a 31.5" long zx 5 speed in...

Re: Engine Rev Up

If you need to squirt starter fluid then the choke is not set rich enough. Failure to rev up properly when cold is also a sign that the choke is not set rich enough. When cold the internal parts of the engine are cold and this heat is what helps evaporate the fuel introduced by the carburetor. To he...

Re: Clutch and Pressure Plate for L18

Roadster PP is overkill for an engine with less than half the power. Stiffer pedal too so not much fun in stop and go. Stock 510 PP is 350Kg so get a cheaper 610/710 PP for an L20B. They are also 200mm and 450Kg clamping.

Re: Clutch and Pressure Plate for L18

Roaster clamping force should be 650 Kg while most other 200mm are 350-400 Kg.

Re: Clutch and Pressure Plate for L18

Short answer is generally, yes, the 510 L16 200mm clutch and PP will fit and work on most L18s, unless this L18 is from a 620 truck which uses a 225mm clutch and PP. Simple enough to just measure the diameter of the clutch disc contact area on the flywheel once you pull it out. 200mm https://i.imgur...

Re: 1968 510 automatic won't start

Weak spark? Hold a plug wire near ground and turn the engine over. You should be able to jump a 3/4" gap

Get a meter and check the voltage on the coil positive terminal with the ignition switch in the START position. It should read what the battery reads. 12.6 on a fully charged one.

Re: Datsun l18 cam lobe wear problem

The wear is cumulative if the wrong oil. Certainly won't hurt to switch to Rotella. It's too late for the damage that is done but if the crappy oils of today is the cause this should stop it getting worse. Have a look at your rockers.

Re: Datsun l18 cam lobe wear problem

Well it could be the cam blank isn't up to the task. Best ones are old reground cams. Is the valve train wet with oil? Has the rocker arm turned blue from any heat? Are you running after market valve springs? If you are using today's engine oil, look no further. When your engine was new, the zinc an...

Re: L Series Engine Parts available today - Rockers, Pistons and more...

Shell Rotella T4 in 10w30 or 15w40 is what I use for the higher ZDDP levels. It's a diesel oil that still retains the high ZDDP levels for the 'flat tappet' valve train on all diesels. Chevron Delo 400 is similar and Esso has one also. It's just a matter of going farther down the shelf at Can Tire a...

Agree, and you have the warmed over L18 anyway: that will pull 5.1% more gear, yet not powerful enough to need two driven rear wheels.
