Stu's 1972 4 Door
painting started, sort of
So I could feel like I am getting somewhere on this project, I painted the underside of the trunk and hood, the engine compartment, some of the interior, and the trunk. 904 white.

Covering up some of that pretty paint with Lizard Skin
My instructor convinced me to spray Lizard Skin on the roof, interior, trunk, and inside the doors. Probably won't take the time to paint all of it white again (just some of the firewall) since most of this won't be seen once the interior and such is installed. Three gallons of Lizard Skin all together.

Brightwork refurbish
Almost 9 months ago, I sent my front grille parts, front trim, and license plate light housings to SSS Restorers. With straightening, polishing, re-chroming, and painting, they look spectacular. Not cheap in any way, but I would have never been able to get this all so straight and nice. A reproduction badge brings it all together.

Re: Stu's 1972 4 Door
There’s nothing like fresh paint to make you feel like forward progress is actually taking place!
I had to look up the Lizard Skin product, as I did not know it - been a while since I have been painting anything!
https://lizardskin.com/
So the product adds mass I would assume, but it looks like it dries hard - is that correct. When you spray the stuff, what percentage of the product gets airborne opposed to what’s applied? When we paint, we loose about 20% or more to the air. I was just curious.
Nice to see your updates.

Love people and use things,

Very very Nice, love the color( mine is very similar)
Progress is slow, but it is progress non the less.
Re: Stu's 1972 4 Door
It does dry hard but just bit flexible. You have to apply it with a "schultz gun", and it sprays on like undercoating or bed liner, so there is pretty high transfer rate. You still want to mask well or you get fly poop spots where you don't want them.Byron510 wrote: ↑07 Sep 2022 06:04 So the product adds mass I would assume, but it looks like it dries hard - is that correct. Thanks. Sometimes it looks too bright, but my son keeps reminding me that all cars have 'too much color' when there is nothing else on the car.

Looking very mint!
Outer C-pillar vent rebuild
I bought some aftermarket outer c-pillar vents and they do not come with the snorkel thing that keeps water out of the interior. When I removed my old ones from my vents, I could see that at one time, there was a rubber flap that I think was to be sort of a one way valve. What was left was crusty, shrunk, and cracked. I removed the heat staked heads off the retaining posts, cleaned and repainted the metal shims (pushes the fap open) and replaced the flaps with 0.5mm thick rubber I found on Ebay. Little bit of silicone at the seam at the connection between the vent and snorkel when I reassembled. Not sure any of this will really matter but it made me feel better.

Re: Door latch re-rubber
I clipped the pics out but THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! I've been having trouble with my wagon doors for years and had yet to find a solution.Stu wrote: ↑28 Apr 2022 21:07 When I was trying to get my doors to latch properly so I could check all the gaps, I realized that the little rubber 'cap' that is on the door side latch mechanism was all worn out and making the latch not properly rotate into the final lock position. When the thickness of the rubber is missing, the cam is actuated 'late' and the second position does not mesh with the body side catch. Most people just start slamming the doors, but could not do all this work then still have to slam the door. The body side latches were also starting to get worn.
https://www.240zrubberparts.com/ makes Z-car specific parts, but their "240z Lock Mechanism Set" has many of the same rubber parts as the 510, so I grabbed a kit for each door.
--edit-- Too bad they are out of stock.... lol

Re: Magnetic fuel door catch
I kinda dig this solution for the keys issue and the stealing of gas possibility. What is the push/push unit from if you don't mind?Stu wrote: ↑06 Sep 2022 20:47 I hate locking fuel doors because I always forget to grab the key and if someone wants to steal my gas, I don't want then bending the tinfoil that this car is made of to get the door open. I modified the fuel door and pocket to use a push-push mechanism to hold the fuel door closed.

I had to set a reminder to keep checking. I think I eventually called called and asked when they would be back in stock so I would know when to check in.Chadsinto510s wrote: ↑04 Nov 2022 14:47 I clipped the pics out but THANK YOU FOR THIS!!!! "new" ID plate
The ID plate from my engine compartment was pretty beat up and I wanted the plate to match the SR20. There are several places that sell reproduction plates, but this was the only one that I could find that had a reasonably correct font, would customize the details, and 'stamped' the number portion of the engine and chassis.

Not cheap, but I'm super happy with it and can't wait to put it in the engine compartment this weekend

Re: Stu's 1972 4 Door
Unfortunately not a real accurate job on matching the fonts (IMHO), but perhaps the closest as you mention. I have not examined closely some of the other options. The stamped numbers are not so close. Nice update for the car though.
I need to get one of these too for my 69. I have a stamp set, I will have to see if it is close to original in size.

Re: Stu's 1972 4 Door
Yep, not super duper accurate, but better than the others I could find that I could put my data into. Luckily it is installed with screws so if I ever find a better reproduction, I can pop it in.iceman510 wrote: ↑18 Nov 2022 06:39 Unfortunately not a real accurate job on matching the fonts (IMHO), but perhaps the closest as you mention.
